Up on the Roof

by FEMAELSTROM, HSM team writer

I was sitting listening to the James Taylor remake of the classic song Up On The Roof  by The Drifters and I got to thinking about Home. That tends to happen a lot to me. I will hear a song or watch a movie and think that it would be a great idea to incorporate an idea from these items into Home. Today, this is what I thought I would like to see that was inspired from this song into Home.

We have the Playground on the landscape of Home and there is a private space based on this public space. I personally do own this place and have it fully decorated, and it is one that once I decorated it, I left it as is, because I love it and it is a great place. The public place is a great one too. The environment is a rich one. It is New York without being called New York. In the background is a bridge that resembles the type common to the island of Manhattan, and there is a river that sits in the span.

The only downside to the public space can be the people there. Many times they are of the ‘fam’ mentality. They speak in some of the guttural terms that come to represent the kind of people on Home that others want to avoid. That being said, the place on a quiet night is a cool one and shines with a brilliant glow of an urban landscape with the traditional type apartments nearby that are made even better by the fact that we have the “Playground” apartment nearby as a personal space. In fact, when one owns the “Playground” apartment, leaving by way of the front door places one on the street in the “Playground” public space. The tie-in is really a good one and one I have always loved and wished had been done more.

The interior of my own apartment, nothing special but I love it.

Part of the public space that I have always thought was a great touch was the rooftop party area. I have never been to a place like this in New York, and to be frank, my only real reference is through the media, both good and bad. The thought though is this – that I would love to see a place in Home that would serve as a private place or club – or both – that gives us a place to call “Home” as well as a staircase that leads to the roof and maybe has some sort of entertainment built in. I think it would be fun to have a place like what Heavy Water did with the “Emo Ray” home in terms of having a rooftop area to access, only here it would be more in the design of the “Playground” apartment style.

Of course, any added elements would be great. A built-in game would, as it always does, make the area one to come back to over and over, and that would vary depending to the developer. There could be controls over time of day, though my Home would be set to night eternally, it just is my favorite.

The existing places are great and definitely worth buying and visiting. The private space has a lot of wall hangings, but no games, prizes, or real features to speak of. It is a great place though, and as a shell house, it is worth buying. The public place is a great one to visit, if one is lucky enough to hit on a ‘fam’-less night. They even have a basketball court where people can play h-o-r-s-e. What I’d like to see is a change in minor details that would add so much flavor to this place or a totally brand new place at the addition of a private apartment with access to a private New York style rooftop to party on or just spend time with friends on. The public space is a great one, but there is always a sense that if I had this for me, I would decorate it in this fashion or that.

This place still has a lot of charm, but we can make or add more I think.

Yes, the existing place is already great, so why should anyone spend the time or money to create a clone of a place that already is out there? Here’s why.

The original developers made a great place, but time and technology have shown us what else could be done, and so I thought that it would be great to see a place with added features, among them a rooftop where one could go and enjoy and decorate what have become landmark environments here in Home. I know that whoever were to try this would do a stellar job, so I wait. Charcoal briquettes in one arm and a plate of hamburger patties in the other waiting to see if and when my wish comes to pass, up on the roof.

FEMAELSTROM came to Home in June 2011 and never wanted to leave, even at weekly maintenance when he usually gets booted. The sand box environment appeals to the explorer in him and often is out and about as he ‘geeks’ out dressed like some sort of sci-fi character, while he people watches in popular public spaces. An artist and writer, FEMAELSTROM loves making friends and meeting people. He loves sci-fi and decorating Home estates and loves to respond “here” when people ask “where are you from?” in public places.

Ultimately it’s cost that defines anything on home, redoing a space wwith a percentage already having it means you wouldn’t sell as many

Yes Gary, but it would also mean people would revisit again and maybe push sales by inviting others to see the improvements. It’s probably been about a year since I’ve been to my crack-den… Yeah, that’s what I call it; you lot should come visit! I’m sure the grime will impress! You know how hard it is to find a gritty, nasty lookin’ space in Home? That’s why I like this personal space so much; if you use the right stuff it can be one the more “real” looking places to go.

I’ve always liked the skyline in the public space, the roof bit is cool, the vendors and corner shop are nice touches and a stage with decks!? Who wouldn’t want that!

However, it’s the people that make the place, and in this case I generally avoid the Playground; ironically because it seems to always be full of children, or wannabe gangsta dudes laughing at people with “no money” because they’re wearing something free or whatever…

Greifers, Beefers, Fam clans havin’ slogan battles (what is THAT about!?) trolls that had a dictionary for breakfast lookin’ for trouble!!!

Heh, maybe they need to level the place and start again, just leave my crack-den standing please…

I like the Playground apartment. I got it right when it came out. I originally made it into a real loft type space, but for some reason it has always seemed like the perfect little museum space, so I turned mine into one using a lot of the art pieces and statues I had accumulated. The fact it has several picture frame areas helps as well.
I think there are quite a few older spaces that could use a reboot but I doubt it will ever happen. With the new abilities that developers now have, they are concentrating on what new concepts they can create.
Though Loot has redone their Hollywood Hills and upgraded the existing ones we owned, they only did that because they came out with their new night version and clubhouses. I think that’s great, but I doubt many others will follow suit.
