The Leaving: A Poetry Machinima

by Phoenix, HSM filmmaker

Any kind of breakup can be hard to handle. The loss of something or someone that had meant something to you leaves the future in doubt in some cases. There can be things left unsaid, incomplete, causing a lack of closure.

Separation is the subject of the poem I have written and the machinima I created to bring my words to life. In the moment I found out about machinima I was excited to see if I could use it to enhance my poetry in anyway.

Before machinima, I used photo slideshows to add to the visuals in my writings. Home, with its public and personal spaces, has also inspired me in some directions in the use of machinima. I’ve had personal highs and lows in Home, and am grateful for both. For me, Home is a playground of possibility and creativity. In my second machinima poetry piece, I address one of my lows, in the poem titled The Leaving.

The personal space I used is one of my favorites: the Lakeside Log Cabin. It seemed to lend itself to the poem in a way that spoke to me. It could be its imagined seclusion in setting from the rest of the world.  Some of the spaces here have such a realistic quality to them that they seem to speak to something inside us; that could just be me musing again, but they make it easy to see an event take place there in my mind.

Lets face it, isn’t that what Home is about? Imagination?

Thanks for your indulgence.
