Go Pirate on a Budget

by Kassadee Marie, HSM team writer

Ahoy, me hearties!  Aye, and shiver me timbers! If you have adventurous seafaring on your mind and salt water in your veins, it’s time to climb on board your galleon, hoist the Jolly Roger, and go practice the sweet trade, swashbucklin’ on the high seas, looking for a place to plunder for booty. This ain’t a job for no lily-livered landlubber, I reckon, neither. In other words, it’s time to go pirate on a budget!

First booty ye’ll be needin’ to pick up is the Pirate Galleon from nDreams for $5.99. This fine ship has recently become available due to the unjust imprisonment of her previous owner. She’s a great, grand ship, worth her weight in doubloons, and she’ll never send you down to Davy Jones’ locker. I think of her as the Red Beauty.

She offers a lot, including great details like three huge masts with white sails flapping in the wind, tropical sunset views all around the lagoon where she’s moored, interesting sound effects, and a large Captain’s wheel. There are also a dock and four decks on three levels, which can all be decorated to suit your style. On the highest deck, you’ll find a challenging cannon mini-game, which offers some pirate-themed rewards — a table, a bar stool, a parrot on a stand, and a pineapple ice bucket for you and your guests. There’s even a radio on the built-in bar at Cap’n Tarquin’s on the wharf, where music plays and you buccaneers and wenches can kick up your heels.

Here’s some advice for ye: pick up some free booty before ye go shopping, and don’t be wasting your pieces of eight. In addition to the cannon mini-game rewards, some booty you could already have in your locker would look great here, so be sure to look through your old reward items.

You might have the Level 5 cannon reward from The Midway 2’s Kitty Cannon game, or — if you went to virtual E3 this year — you should have the free cannon from the Cutthroats exhibition. Playing the Cutthroats: Battle for Black Powder Cove game will net you a ship load of goodies, like an eyepatch, skulls, a Jolly Roger rug and a portrait of Blackbeard. The Bootleggers game in the Action District offers a reward of a barrel chair that is very suitable here, and LOOT has a free Blackbeard standee that’s perfect for this space. Recently, a visit to Pier Park gave some more items that you might like here, such as the candle, the black crow and the stocks for holding any scallywag who attempts a mutiny, just before you have him keelhauled. Don’t forget treasure chests, such as the one from Irem’s Seaside of Memories or the Villain’s Lair, if you have them.

If you’d like to pick up some other items, both LucasArts’ Monkey Island — which I should mention has been removed from the Navigator and can be only reached in the Mall on the second floor — and Sony’s Cutthroats offer a variety of pirate furniture items, including an outstanding bundle from Cutthroats, with nine pieces for $6.99.

For a great matching style in your clothing as a Gentleman (or Gentlewoman) o’ Fortune, and a look that’s a lot of fun too, Lockwood offers four pirate outfits for the lads and lassies in their Fool Throttle line.

These four-piece (and one five-piece) outfits are $3.99 and are budget items because they come in a bundle with a companion. You can pick up the “Shipmate Shindig” pack for the lads or the “Buccaneer Bubbly” for the lassies, with Barnacle the Crab (which would be $1.99 alone) included or you can pick up the “Corsair Cordial” pack for the lassies or the “Captain Capricious” pack for the lads, with Picaroon the Monkey (which would be $2.49 alone) included. These are really great deals.

If you’d like to put your own look together, again both LucasArts’ Monkey Island and Sony’s Cutthroats offer a variety of pirate clothing pieces for various prices. LucasArts has some unique beards for the guys that you might particularly want to check out. Cutthroats also has three companions for $2.49 each that you might enjoy. They are a monkey called “Mister Peels the Picaroon”, a parrot called “Captain Crackers” and a ghost ship called “The Floating Nederlander”. All three are also available for $4.99 in a bundle. While shopping at Cutthroats, you might want to pick up the music box for $1.99. It plays the theme music from the game, and would be a great musical addition to your space.

For a “slightly” different look, the guys could also pick up the “B’Loon theme outfit – Pirate” for $2.99 from Konami. Yo-ho-ho. The ladies could pick up one of the mermaid costumes from them for a different look too, at a slightly higher price. These full body costumes come in five colors and color combinations for $3.99 each, and they have a nice mid-air pose and some very interesting animations, such as continuous movements like “flip”.

And finally, me maties, if ye be wishin’ to talk like a pirate, here’s some advice for ye. Be usin’ those adjectives at least doubled, if not more. Remember there are no “g’s” or “v’s” in pirate speak. It’s rowin’, sailin’ and fightin’ ye be doin’ o’er thar and e’er remember it. Pirates have no past, so always speak in the present tense. I be tellin’ ye true and no, nay, ne’er forget it! And don’t forget your “Arrrrgghhhh’s”.

Home is endlessly entertaining to this California girl. Kassadee has been in Home for about four years, and loves almost everything about it (with a few notable exceptions). She spends way too much money there, and perhaps too much time... Someday she will travel the world and write about the people she meets and the places she sees.

  1. I was trying to figure out whether I like this article because I love the Pirate Galleon or the article itself. It didn’t long to realize the answer is both. A fun read.

Nice read. Don’t forget about about the free treasure chests from Southern Island and Villains Lair.
Personally I prefer going Pirate on no budget…LOL.
Adding the Ghost Pirate Ship and Cutthroats personal space into the mix.

Good read as always Kass. I am not a pirate nut but I think it is fun to dress like one and shoot stuff at Cutthroats occasionally. Keep doing these they are fun reads.
