A Season of Giving

by FEMAELSTROM, HSM team writer

Well, now that this Christmas is behind us and we look into the new year, I thought it would be nice to look back at the gift-giving season that was, and reflect at how much was really given out and that we should all take a moment to thank the work of all those developers that made it so much fun this season.

I know we all have those around us in the non-Home world that gave us gifts — and for that we are all appreciative — and there are those in Home that gave us gifts too. I was given great things in both realms. I appreciate everything that was given to me and love it all, as it’s always the thought that counts. In that vein, let us look at a sampling of things that were handed out to us just for being on Home.

Let’s start with the Winter Fest space. This place was really a lot of fun. They had great games to participate in for those that wanted to collect a nice gathering of prizes. There was kissing under the mistletoe, a parade, riding a sleigh, dancing, and dueling that all earned you experience points. There was also eating a meal and ice skating that was for the fun of it, but still made the experience worth it to do with your friends.  I was partial to the dueling game and simply stood at the door and waited for any takers, and there were plenty. Between the dueling and the sleigh rides, with a pinch of parade, kissing and dancing, I was able to get all the masks that were the prizes. The atmosphere was fun and festive, and was worth going to time after time. They handed out freebies for really very little task.  This was a great treat from Sony and I know that I appreciated it a lot.

It was fun, as always, but we also got lots of these, can I shake it?

Lockwood also put out items. Lockwood is always known for great freebies. They are known for their freebies to the point that people make a point of coming back to Lockwood spaces just to get the freebies all year long (which, of course, leads to a certain percentage of them monetizing while they’re there). I don’t know that I got all the available items, but I can say that I did get trees. The trees were modern and fashionable, and were in the public space, free for the taking. Their public space is an ultra-modern, sleek design that is a total revamp of their classic store, and during the Christmas/winter season, it was snowing inside. A nice touch. Once again, Lockwood did not disappoint.

Granzella gave us chicken. Okay, maybe chicken is not traditional Christmas or holiday fare (though some contend that a turkey is a large chicken), but it was presented with their Christmas update in the GZ Burger space and free to all that visited the space by way of a friend – which is how I came to own it. All anyone had to do was walk into the store if they had access to the space of their own ownership or a friend ( as I did, thanks Mae), and go to the store.

Granzella also offered us a remodel of the popular Edo and Private Hideaway public spaces that were more winter themed, always night, and with snow on the ground. For the new year, they had a treasure hunt that had one traveling between the Edo and Tropical Island Private Hideaway public spaces. More than the giveaway item, it was a something to do on New Years, aside from going to parties.

Juggernaut was not to be outdone. A friend of mine, Bobsfed, invited me to his home where he had a special stocking. When I clicked ‘X’ on the stocking, I received a free juggernaut robot companion that was sporting a Santa hat and candy cane.

I wonder what it is, can I shake this one?

JAM offered us free Christmas-themed sweaters for him and her, which upon closer inspection were designed really well with lots of intricate detail.

There were probably other things that were out there, but sometimes it is just too numerous to tally up, and other people will find along the way.

Let’s face it: none of these companies have to gift us anything at all. They are companies that are in business to make a profit, and expand their brand. In the generosity of the season, they saw fit to give us a bounty of  free items that made so much of the Christmas and winter fun on Home.

Overall, it was a great place to be during Christmas and the winter holiday. There were a lot of fun things to do and a lot of fun freebies to be had and found. To all the developers and companies and minds that made this past season a great one on Home, I offer a deep and hearty thank you for the large amount of fun to be had. Well done and bravo, not simply for the freebies, but for showing Home’s citizenry that you cared enough to alter entire estates and spaces, and offer gifts that had to be made and developed just for the giving.

FEMAELSTROM came to Home in June 2011 and never wanted to leave, even at weekly maintenance when he usually gets booted. The sand box environment appeals to the explorer in him and often is out and about as he ‘geeks’ out dressed like some sort of sci-fi character, while he people watches in popular public spaces. An artist and writer, FEMAELSTROM loves making friends and meeting people. He loves sci-fi and decorating Home estates and loves to respond “here” when people ask “where are you from?” in public places.

I personally, will never complain about free stuff because quite frankly if it is terrible, I got what I paid for and of course it’s free.

Some of the free stuff in Home is great, like that frozen fountain from LKWD I’ve been waiting on since Christmas. Some of it is horrendous though, but like KLC says, if it’s that tacky then chuck it in storage and be done with it. You paid nothing so no harm done, right?

Too many people carry the attitude of entitlement with them though, and feel like they’re OWED everything that cones their way. To me, that’s just a sad state of immaturity that they’ll either grow out of, or go through the rest of their life feeling hard-done-by.

What they’ll always miss out on is that the best things in life are free, and I dont mean material things. ; )
