Go Royal on a Budget
by Kassadee_Marie, HSM team writer
The idea of royalty is ancient, but it still has popular appeal. During the Bronze Age, which took place as early as the 4th millennium BC in some areas, there were already records of still earlier kings. Though we don’t have kings and queens here in America, we can still enjoy the fantasy of royalty on Home. And you don’t have to spend a king’s ransom to look majestic. Here are some ideas on ways you can look like a queen or a king on Home without bankrupting the royal treasury.
For your personal estate, you may want to choose the Visari Throne Room. This standard priced space ($4.99) is rather dark, and it’s one of the smaller estates on Home, but it’s very well suited as the throne room of your vast (although imaginary) castle. There are several tall stained-glass windows, immense walls with a ceiling high, high above and a large dais, which can be reached by two curved sets of stairs.
Alliances, secret deals and intrigues often took place while various parties awaited their audience with a head of state. There were often large waiting rooms provided for these petitioners, and the main floor of this space could be set up as a waiting area with the addition of a few benches, or chairs and tables. If you have the free Gothic candelabra, table and chair offered as rewards in Lockwood Showcase last Halloween, you’re all set. Food was usually offered to the petitioners, and last year’s free Thanksgiving feast from Pier Park would look great placed there. You may want to pick up a few of the food items on sale from Santorini, Greece, such as the salad, olive platter, vegetable or legume basket for $.25 each, to add to your buffet. The red-trimmed stack of Ghostbusters dinner plates from Loot for $.49 always adds a nice touch to a buffet-style meal.
The smaller upper area is the perfect place for the throne(s), and I recommend the free large Visari chair for this. This item can be found in the Home Originals furniture store, if you don’t have it already. For a luxury look in this area, you may want to add any rugs, plants, fountains, or almost anything in gold, that you currently own. Even the pirate rug that can be won at Cutthroats would look good there, if it’s mostly covered up by other furnishings so the design doesn’t show.
If you are able to save money by using free furniture and ornaments, one rather substantial purchase you may want to consider is a chess set. The most obvious reason for this is the names of the pieces used in this game, but also it is also a pastime that your guests can enjoy while visiting your throne room. The first of the five chess sets, available for $2.49 in the Games Store, is suitable for this theme. Chess sets can be purchased in various styles, each in a single unit that combines a table, two chairs and the game board.
The Life-Sized Chess set for $2.99, also found in the Games Store, could be a huge showpiece for your main room. There is also a large chess set bundle in the Home Originals Furniture store, and it’s rather expensive at $5.99, especially since it is not an actual game. However the pieces are sold individually for $.49, so you might want to pick up the King and Queen in either black or white. By the way, the giant chess board (also $.49) makes a great floor covering in other spaces.
While your first thoughts of royal clothing may be the King and Queen outfits offered at Exclusives, or the King and Queen of Cards outfits from Digital Leisure, or even the Medieval Northern King and Queen from VEEMEE, a regal look can be made from many outfits with the simple addition of a crown. Look through your present clothing for suits, tuxedos, fancy dresses or gowns that you already own. Crowns can be purchased on Home in several stores, and two of the best are offered for $.99 in Threads’ Home Originals store, as “Royal Crowns”. Two simple crowns are also offered in the Costumes’ Home Originals store for $.49 each. These crowns all come with attached hairstyles, as do most crowns and hats currently on Home.
If you own the Easter egg hunt game from Lockwood (Baron’s Eggcellent Plan), you should already have won the royal cygnet outfits. The males’ is a tuxedo and the females’ is a feathered gown — with the addition of a crown you’ll look regal indeed! You may have also picked up the “swan wand” at the same time, and this could be used as your scepter.
No scepters are sold as individual items for females at present, but you may like the look of the Knight’s Lance for $.99 from Heavy Water, or the Dark Sorceress’ staff from Costumes Home Originals for $.49. Males have two options in Costumes Home Originals in the clothing tab. These are the Medieval Scepter and Medieval Spiked Scepter for $.99 each. These are large items, and look rather like weapons.
True royalty can choose any pet as a companion that he or she wishes, of course, and there is a plethora to choose from in the Sidekicks Store. If you have the white lion from E3, you already have the perfect companion. The imperial lion available from Lockwood also has a great look for this theme. After all, the lion is the “king of the jungle”. It is included in the Rare Species pack, which bundles three companions for $3.99. Remember that, up until September 5th, $1.00 of every purchase was donated to REACT (Red Endangered Animal Connection Trust); if you purchased the Rare Species pack prior to that date, feel good about making a rather royal gesture on your part! It was like buying each companion for a dollar and donating a dollar, also. Indeed, we hope to see more such promotions in Home.
Although some royal persons were spoiled and worthless, true nobility is known for good manners and courtesy . As you walk through Home as a King or as a Queen, your attitude should be one of nobility, not superiority, while you graciously bestow compliments upon and good will toward all your subjects.
