Go Zombie On A Budget

by Kassadee Marie, HSM team writer

What was that sound?

Was that a creak a footstep on the stair? Is that strange rustling noise the curtains or something else? Was that a garbled growl you heard there in the dark? Are you hiding in your bed under the covers now? Is your brain all a-tingle with fear? Or perhaps you’d rather be the one growling in the dark and virtually craving brains?

Sony must have had all you zombie lovers in mind when they made the Siren Lounge and the Ward of Despair public space. And just for you they designed the perfect private space too – the Zombie DeadQuarters. This atmospheric two-room personal estate is poorly lit and rather tiny, but how much space does a brain-munching undead person need?

You arrive at this estate at the top of a staircase and walk down into one room of a nearly destroyed building with only a few items such as a table, couch and two sinks remaining from the devastation. Even the roof is mostly missing, allowing for a view of a sinister and gloomy cloud-filled sky. Several fluorescent lights flicker in a few spots there, allowing for a somewhat limited view of this space. There is another small room adjoining the larger one, that appears to be a hospital room – perhaps of the mental type – due to the little metallic bed, half-tiled walls, and small windows high up in one wall. You’ll enjoy the rattling door and other sound effects there and best of all, there is a full zombie outfit as a reward for you and your guests.

On sale for only $2.99, this estate is a dead steal.

It’s not really necessary, bu if you do want to decorate this space, look through your rewards for suitable free items first, such as the zombie head, suitcase and lounge chair from the Dead Island game that was in that version of Central Plaza, the prizes from the Dead Nation game or the skulls won at the Cutthroats game. These last two are a little ritzy, but should look really great in the dark. This space has places for picture frames or wall items, so for purchases, I recommend the Dead Island Blood Splatter Wall Art pack.

I suggest this bundle of three patterns for $1.99 because it’s a good price and because, after all, zombies are messy eaters. While you’re there take a look at the zombie window for $1.49 and the zombie wall for $1.99, took unique items.  Also, check the Sony Furniture Originals store. You might want to add a few items like the Apocalyptic oil drum, the rusted work bench, rusted waste drum, or rusted ottoman for $.49 each. For atmospheric lights I suggest the Bonk torch, if you own it already, as it can only be purchased in a bundle. Another torch is the “lantern” for $.99 from LucasArts’ Monkey Island.

Today’s well dressed zombie should have more than one outfit to wear and there have been various other zombie and near-zombie costumes available on Home to buy or even to win. Two such outfits can be won from Siren’s Ward of Despair. You’ll need to have the right scenario in the game to pick up the nurse’s or doctor’s costume there, but the game is fairly easy, especially after a few run-throughs and owning nerves of steel. These are not strictly zombie outfits, but they do have smears of blood and with the right face design and hair-do and hair color they can look really good.

The other zombie costumes available from the Dead Island costume shop are a bit expensive at $2.49 each, but they all have special  animations when they walk. There’s one female costume which is a full body (relatively speaking) in a bikini and three male costumes, which are the decapitated zombie, the policeman zombie and the zombie in a straight jacket. You could pick up the Burn Zombie Burn costume, the Christmas Zombie for $1.99, which is suitable all through December, or really any time on Home.

The absolutely perfect companion, the Little Zombie, is available for purchase at the Dead Nation public space and the price of $1.49 makes it the least expensive one on Home. It’s hard to say a lot about something that perfectly matches a theme and has the lowest price of all companions also, except go buy it! As with all companions, this gory little fellow will follow you faithfully everywhere on Home (except when you play a game).

If you want music in your space, I suggest you consider the Scary-achis Skeleton Mariachi Band, from the Music Store, mostly for their look, as the music is rather lively. The skeleton band members may not strictly have a zombie look, but animated undead fit the theme, generally. They play several tunes at random while swaying and almost seeming to strum their guitars. The stereo from Novus Prime also has several haunting tunes which you may prefer. As is true of most musical items on Home, you can pick them up for $1.99 each.

Last but not least, I highly recommend the Plants vs. Zombie game to all of you, zombie-lover or not. You can down load a free demo from the Playstation Store to check it out.

This game is great entertainment and has several styles and a lot features. You can play in the original adventure mode or the unlock the puzzle, mini-game or survival modes. There’s a two player option available in both co-op and versus styles. There’s also a Zen garden where you can grow plants and which is relaxing to play and can earn you money to spend at the “store” built into the game. In addition to the garden and store, there is an almanac of plants and zombies which can be very useful.

Have fun! I’m betting you will. And remember: brains are the other white meat.

Home is endlessly entertaining to this California girl. Kassadee has been in Home for about four years, and loves almost everything about it (with a few notable exceptions). She spends way too much money there, and perhaps too much time... Someday she will travel the world and write about the people she meets and the places she sees.

Totally agree, the plants versus zombie game is a very nice.
It is in a sense a tower defence game where you kill zombies by growing the correct plants. One of the mini games even allows you to play as the zombies and where the foal is to eat the brains rather then to protect them.
You can also get it on PC and IPAD.

I TOTALLY bought Dead Island because of the Home content and for the exploding Zombie outfit. More Zombie items in Home is a must. I am very dissapointed that Murray, the evil demonic skull didn’t come out as a companion to expand the Monkey Island merch.

As always, this was a fun read Kass!
