This episode offers an interesting balance between what Home gets right and where Home goes astray. E3 2012 was, without doubt, one of the best events ever held in North America’s Home and the best virtual E3 booth so far. Combine a fun variety of quests, some cool rewards and a second floor dedicated entirely to PlayStation Home, and you’ve got a formula for success. For those who couldn’t be at the real thing, it gave us a chance to taste the E3 experience, complete with previews of upcoming Home games and a working demo of Lockwood’s Mercia, which looks very promising. Hopefully they continue this formula next year, as it was a real joy to have an E3 all our own.
On the astray front, we have the Nightlife Lounge, which is, in many ways, a brilliant personal space. The built-in dance floor, fashion runway, smoke machines and atmosphere are all top notch, but then there are those missing details. No music? We can live with that, but why include a soundtrack of people talking and smoke machine noises? Then there’s the DJ booth and the bar that cannot be accessed…you’ll note that The Silent Clown makes a return, and Gingerbeard, last seen in the Cutthroats preview, also has a cameo.
These are some fun and subtle ways of criticizing the space. I don’t often serve up criticism in HomeCast; if I think something falls short of the mark, it simply isn’t included. In this case, however, I had a brilliant clubhouse in front of me with two areas that should have been accessible but were not, which has a huge impact on the usability of the space. While it’s not a fatal design flaw, it’s a very obvious oversight, much like the non-functional dining room chairs in the first version of the PlayStation Home Mansion First Floor.
The Silent Clown and Gingerbeard are hoping those oversights get patched in the future. It should be noted that The Silent Clown won’t say anything, but Gingerbeard does have those cannons.
Great episode keep’em coming.
