The Dust Hasn’t Settled Yet: Dust 514 and PS3

by Phoenix, HSM team writer

A few months ago, HSM and I brought you an article on the upcoming Hybrid MMO from CCP, Dust 514. Here is updated information for those still awaiting this online game.

As they stated in March of this year, CCP has continued their rollout of Dust 514 to the waiting gamer community. The first round of beta registration has closed. It was announced that the first batch of registrees will be getting their codes soon. Anyone wanting to be a part of the Dust movement was urged to register for the beta. CCP is eager to get its fans into its world, and into the battle for the world!

This past week at Fanfest, attendees and Eve Online players were given their first access to Dust beta game play. The PSN codes had been scheduled to arrive earlier, but due to a few unforeseen snags, these codes would be sent out on Friday, May 18. Not very much of a delay, but to the Eve and PSN fans waiting for these codes, it may have been a bit of a letdown. As a little something special for the patience of the fans, CCP is adding a special event this weekend. The details will be released later on Friday.

CCP has also released information about what to do if your beta code key does not work. Although you may be eager to get in on the closed beta play, they also warned that just because you registered, it does not mean you will be receiving a code. So understand this before you register. If you’re a fan of Eve, CCP or Dust 514, then I know you will be registering at the website and taking the chance. Players can register at http://dust514.com/beta.

In case you’re new to Dust or CCP information, let me recap what Dust 514 is.

Dust 514 is the long awaited free-to-play Hybrid MMO from the CCP group. These guys are the creators of the multi-successful online MMO, Eve. Dust is the next step in the evolution of online multiplayer gaming. It will be played from your PS3 console in conjunction with the Eve Online computer game. Eve can be played on any computer system, while Dust 514 will only be available on the PS3. From your PS3 console, you will be playing with gamers in the world of Eve. CCP promises hundreds of worlds to explore, and possibly a “never ending” game play.

You can look forward to warfare on the largest scale to date, and some of the most intense infantry combat ever experienced in an MMO. There will be mercenary missions and basic training in real time. CCP promises that players will experience adventure on a scope unimaginable. Thousands of different maps will be available to all players, with fantastic worlds and inhabitants for alliances and betrayals. Life in Dust will be what you, the gamer, make of it. For seasoned first-person shooter gamers, this has to be exciting.

In the last few months since their event on Home, CCP has welcomed thousands of closed beta players, and they will be letting in a limited number of additional players to the war this summer. As the summer progresses, they will continue to expand the beta. CCP promises to discuss more details at 2012 E3 this summer.

Though, for some, I’m sure this event will not be on the same scale as Final Fantasy XI, it is still a first, and PS3 has it. Dust will be played in real time, as XI was, so this is not anything new to some PS3 players.

I find that I am not surprised that Sony and PS3 are the venue that CCP has chosen to bring this hybrid game to the masses. The PS3 was and is a game changer. CCP agrees with this, and for now it is exclusively on the PS3, even if at a later date Dust is released on the PC, as some believe it will be. For now, PS3 will be the only place to play it.

Sony celebrated its 50th anniversary recently. PS3 is surely one of the jewels in the Sony crown. Since its beginning, the PS3 has been a console for the future. With the launch of Dust 514, the PS3 will once again stand out as the first to house an MMO that entered the history of online gaming with a never-before change to this genre — allowing computer and console gamers to play in the same worlds at the same time.

What happens on the PS3 in Dust will have a direct effect on the events in the world of Eve in its computer universe. The very idea of such innovation says it all. I expect gamers to sign onto Dust this summer in awe of what lies ahead for them in this new MMO genre.

How many more hybrid games will become available to gamers after this? What lies ahead for CCP and the PS3? Dust will put gamers in the next generation of first player shooters. There’s no going back after this. Will this MMO have too much in it? Has CCP promised more than can be experienced and enjoyed by the novice gamer?

Perhaps at E3, CCP will give us some insight to these questions, but real answers must wait for the public launch of Dust. Along with all the new game titles and the gamer “must haves” that are sure to be seen at E3 this year, PS3 users will have the chance to experience Dust once again, or for the first time, at the Sony booth in the West Hall. For all those reading this yes, I know this is old news now. It’s been a few weeks since all this happen. I’m not late on the update, the update was late to come out. :)

Im in the beta! Spent some time on the dirt sprayin’ some blood this afternoon. WOO-HAA!!

If no one has ever played EVE on the PC, I suggest you do the 14 free days you can get. One of the VERY few MMO’s that really sucked me in.

I have been hearing about this new game for about 6 months now from a good friend who plays Eve consistently and has for a long time. It sounds very intriguing and though I don’t like FPS I may give it a try once it is out of Beta. Nice read Phoenix.
