Silent Home

by Jersquall, HSM Podcast Editor

The Silent Hill series is arguably considered the scariest video game series of all time; certainly the first three entries are fondly remembered for their clever mix of atmospheric horror, suspense, characters, puzzles and true fight-or-flight action. Whereas other games might jump out and shout “Boo!” at you, Silent Hill has a way of creeping under your skin.

Recall the first time you played the first Silent Hill’s opening sequence — searching for your daughter, wandering through back alleys, with odd creatures crawling towards you, and the chain-link fences closing in…it’s genuinely frightening. And that violation was merely the start of the game.

So now we fast-forward to today, and Home.

Home doesn’t really have much when it comes to survival horror. There’s Siren Hospital, which — if you squint — sort of resembles a hospital level from Silent Hill. And there’s the Cutteridge Estate, which actually does have a few subtle chills to it. Or the Zombie Deadquarters, if you prefer things a bit more overt.

But now, finally, we have a Silent Hill estate in Home.

I’ll let the video do the talking. But I’ll pose two questions for you:

1. Are you inclined to purchase this estate?

2. If so, how will you use it?

Step into Silent Hill…

I am busy imagining one heck of a machinima that could be built around that space…..

  2. I have it although I know nothing about the game.
It reminds me of some of my favorite restaurants past their hey day although it’s too dark for me. Their should be a light switch to light it up as in the video. Or maybe their is and somebody didn’t pay the electric bill. A shame, a shame indeed.

I may be a bit daft but for some reason, perhaps the non-working jukebox, it reminds me of Happy Days and Bill Haley’s Rock Around the Clock. Maybe Ritchie & the Fonz will pop in.

Dunno what I’ll do with it. Probably go have a cheeseburger.

Rock Around the Clock video from 1972.

    One word; “Creepy”!!

    1. I will definitely buy this space, as I am a diehard Silent Hill fan (primarily of the earlier games in the series).

    2. I’ll light it up substantially, then use it to display all my food-related reward items. It’s also perfect for those two active item Slurpee machines in my inventory; I was never able to find a perfect space in which to put those…

That was a really good video Jers! The lighting in this space is a little rough even with spotlights. Very detailed space though. I like it.

The one thing it does is make me want to play the game. I youtubed the Diner walkthrough portion of SH: Downpour to get some back story of the estates origins and let’s just say things go to hell quickly there.. The Downpour game looks very rough in violence and language. This is Silent Hill.

Thanks everyone and Thanks Norseling for being you.

Silent Hill is one video game I remember quite well -- while others have faded into little fragments of “been there -- done that -- got the t-shirt”. I am definitely working on that story idea now. Bill’s Halloween homage inspired me to do a really scary machinima and I think this will be the site.

I am not a real horror fan so I won’t be buying this for sure, but I can see a lot of filmmakers have their wheels spinning on this one and I can see why. I saw it myself through a friend and the space definitely has atmosphere, it gave me a few ideas for plots as well. Nice video Jers.
