The Malted Falcon

by Keara22HI, HSM team writer and filmmaker

And so, the idea of a film noire using the Rapture Metro Apartment was born!

I gathered my group of brigands, and (oops – wrong movie, that’s Captain Blood).

I gathered my group of HSM crazies and fanned the flames of creative tomfoolery.  We did Google image searches for Humphrey Bogart, Peter Lorre, and Mary Astor.  Would it be possible to cast this thing?  Crafting an avatar to look specifically like someone is a challenge.  We came up with passable doubles – at least, if the audience has never seen a movie starring them, they won’t know the difference.

Then, the story:

Set in the late 1940’s.  A private detective, a suspicious looking bartender, and a band singer who thinks she is being framed for a murder.  Whose murder?  The owner of the Hotsy-Totsy Club.  It’s a dive but the owner is ‘connected’ and his club is being used to launder smuggled diamonds.

Late one night the owner is found shot dead in his office at the Club.  The safe is open.  And whatever was in there is gone.  It was rumored that the singer had been involved with him and was jealous of the new hat check girl.  The police are about to close in and arrest her when she runs to the private detective to help her prove her innocence.

She tells the detective that the item stolen from the safe was a statue of a falcon, used to smuggle diamonds in from Mexico.  She is sure that the bartender killed the owner and stole the falcon.  She asks the detective to accompany her to search the bartender’s apartment and find the evidence that will clear her.

And THAT is where our video begins:  with the singer and the detective sneaking into the bartender’s apartment….

    WHHHHHHHAAAAHAHA… :-()
The pace was perfect, I loved how it flowed from shot to shot with engaging text.
    Great idea, fabulous presentation.
    THANKS!
What’s next? The Perils of Polleen? I vote, YES!

Granny, that was really cool! You should have been doing this long ago. I am glad help you with this, and look forward to new projects with you! Great story line!

You’re really getting slick on the editing front, aren’t you? (Should i worry about you taking my job in RL? )I love the cross dissolves and it being shot in black & white really works in the Rapture apartment, it did have an atmosphere in there. the soundtrack really hits the spot as to which era this movie is set in.. I got the humour of it right way (although your captions seem confusing for me, as to who’s saying what line, but this could be me) but overall, I loved it..next project? Hitchcock’s Rear Window?.. the sky is the limit for you as far as Machinema goes..

Looking forward to seeing your next movie ! :)

That’s why I used different fonts for each character. Now, IF I learn how to add voice-overs, watch out world!

Next black&white project is a spoof of the Jackie Gleason show from the 1950’s: “The HomeyMooners” with Ralph Cramden as a trophy hound.

nice vid! lookin forward to the next one 8D!

  7. For someone who claims they don’t know how to make one of those fancy word films, you’se did quite all right.

Putting aside I’m prejudiced because I love the Rapture space, I think you have a future. You obviously have a knack for the filming of the past.

    Thanks!

    Bye

Wow, great fun Granny! I loved it and it’s very much in keeping with today’s top film in Hollywood…a Black and White Silent Film. It would have been even more so if you would have used the Rat Terrier Companion! Lol really, really great job too Burbie and Bill, can’t wait for the next one Granny!

Well, for voiceovers, you have two options. There SHOULD be an option in your editing software to add voiceover. Or you can PRE RECORD your voiceover digitally and save it as an MP3 file (which is what most of your music soundtracks come under anyways) in some cases you can shoot somebody saying stuff and then import the clips into your timeline, an option should be there for you to ‘DETACH AUDIO’ from your clip. I don’t know what software that your using (Im only assuming it’s Movie Maker for Windows, which is a good editing software to start out with)

But Oh YES, look out world when you do that, because you could record your actors saying those lines and insert it over your movie. :)

  11. I love how you have the perfect mix of showcasing the space along its special attributes with a great story that keeps you interested. Love the damp, rain look. You’ve captured the look of film noir. Nice mise en scène.
