HomeStation Magazine Issue #10, Featuring Richard Garriott: Online Now!
by NorseGamer, HSM Editor-in-Chief
Well now, how’s that for a cover story?
We honestly weren’t quite sure how to top Issue #9. Interviewing Ralph Baer — the man who freaking invented the video game — is a hard act to follow. Once you set the bar that high for yourself as a publication, there’s no backsies.
That was when, in one of our production meetings, Burbie suggested reaching out to Richard Garriott de Cayeux. His new venture, Portalarium, is starting to make some serious waves in the arena of social gaming; and since social gaming is what this publication is dedicated to, it made perfect sense.
Granted, it’s sort of like writing a student paper on the history of England and deciding to give Holinshed a call. You really don’t expect much of a response.
You can thus imagine how much it hurt, falling out of the chair, when we did get a response.
Please understand: I grew up on Richard Garriott games. And you almost certainly did, too. It’s practically impossible to call yourself a gamer and not in some way have been affected by Lord British. The man is the Tolkien of the video game industry. So what the hell is he doing in the social games arena?
Reinventing it, that’s what.
Home went through its own reinvention in 2011 — as part of an evolution which is continuing still. And sometimes it’s good to look at other perspectives on social gaming, outside the framework of Home. It’s a big, big marketplace out there.
That said, we’ve got an avalanche of Home content for you in this issue:
- Jersquall interviews Lazy 8 Studios and Codename about Cogs;
- HearItWow asks what your comfort zone is for virtual commodity prices;
- Gideon examines the evolution of Home’s overall strategic direction;
- Aeternitas wonders if “commercial” glitching could be achieved;
- Ted looks at upselling techniques for virtual commodities and services;
- Torcher takes us through the Home experience for someone who’s older;
- Bonzo reveals a deeply personal story about virtual reality and sexual orientation;
- Orion guides us through the Lockwood Publishing Showcase;
- Seal provides a better look at the Homeling Collective’s rank hierarchy;
- Burbie investigates the benefits of virtual reality for those living with autism;
And there’s much more. For instance, our friends over in France — VengeanceFR and SORROW-83 — bring you the latest installment of their “Home City” graphic novel, as well as a really fun interview done in the form of “The HSM Show” with Keara! Keep in mind that all the copy was translated from French into English, and they did a remarkable job.
Also, hidden in the pages of this gigantic issue, you’ll find codes for the LOOT Space Apartment, Nebula Airship, Creek Falls, and various gemstone suits (ruby, emerald and sapphire)! Keep in mind that those codes are single-use only, so whomever finds a particular code and redeems it first is the winner!
But when it came to codes, we decided to do something a little special this time around.
For Issue #10, HomeStation and Lockwood Publishing have teamed up to bring you a special Lockwood Trivia Contest. Think you’re the ultimate Lockwood fan? Put it to the test! In this issue, you’ll find a battery of Lockwood trivia questions. Post your answers here, in response to this announcement. First to win with the correct answers gets a choice of either a Midnight Glade or a Dream Yacht, and the runner-up gets whichever one is left. How about that, eh?
Special mention really must be given to HomeStation’s Art Director, MJG74, for putting these magazine issues together. Issue #10, in particular, is roughly twice the size of anything we’ve done before, and he is the man behind the scenes who has labored ridiculous hours for the last year to bring you approximately one-hundred pages per month of epic Home magazine entertainment, while holding a full-time job and living with a truly ungodly commute. Seriously, give that man some kudos!
HomeStation prides itself on being a top-tier provider of journalism and entertainment devoted to Home and social gaming in general. With this, our first quarterly issue of 2012, we make a very powerful statement in terms of what we bring to the table. Thank you for coming with us on this journey.

You did an awesome job Norse, as I expected you to on this interview. I loved being able to finally read this after all of this waiting. I have to say I wasn’t disappointed either, I knew this man was someone who stood out among his peers and I loved hearing his voice as he spoke to us about the future of social gaming.
