Spotlight On: the Louisiana Hurricanes

“Success is not the key to happiness; happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” – Albert Schweitzer

Who are the Louisiana Hurricanes? I had heard of this group in Home long before I actually got to meet them.

I’ve been doing a series of sorts on the many myriad of clubs in Home, so this seemed like a perfect fit. Then my good friend Count Edmund Dante said he was working on it, so I went on to other projects. But real life took over for Ed, and he asked me to use the data he had collected to finish this. I met with the club to clarify what was needed and put the article together. This is the result of that effort.

The Louisiana Hurricanes were originally started in 2008, in the early months of closed beta. It was founded by lsutigersfan72 with a group of his friends. Unfortunately, the club didn’t do very well and they broke up within six months after many of the members became disillusioned with Home because of all the errors that were occurring in closed beta. Then in October of 2010, Cajun4life found the group on the Sony forums and contacted lsutigersfan; they became good friends and the club took off again.

Home Prom

There are quite a few people who are in charge of the group at present, lsutigersfan72, its leader, and Cajun4life and xXSkullOKingxX who are clubhouse owners as well. Then there are several sub leaders; king_of_games, Onikotsugumo7, bassman_300, Freaksme, Hush_Puppie, Desigamer2005,Steeler-Nation69, Coolguy7275 and LH_Recruiter, who is the main recruiter of the club. There is a website that was created by deadbyfaith that is currently run by Cajun4life and lsutigersfan that can be found at www.lh-hc.com and a second one at www.louisianahurricanes.webs.com.

There is also a You Tube channel to look at and see what they have been up to.

I asked lsutigersfan what the purpose of the LH was; he stated, “The Louisiana Hurricanes are here on Home to help the Home community and make Home a better place to enjoy.”

When asked about the origins of the name of the club, Cajun4life said that it was because lsutigersfan came from southern Louisiana and that hurricanes are a force to be reckoned with.

“Besides that, it just seemed to fit with Louisiana,” he stated.

Another member, deadbyfaith, said, “Well, we rock Home like a hurricane. We like to be different and help others. We are a humble group. but we are proud of what we do.”

Mardi Gras

The club has had several very successful events that they have organized and hosted for the Home community. The first of these was a Mardi Gras event in February of 2010 that was held at the MotorStorm space and was extremely well received by the people who attended. “We just just took ideas of how to run this from the club, and though we expected it to only last for about two hours, it just kept on going, like they never wanted it to end,” said Cajun4life. This encouraged the club to come up with more ideas and they decided to try and do at least two events a month in Home.

They try to center each event around something that is happening on the calender that month. For example: an April Fools dance, a Tribute to the Troops and the very popular Home Prom. The latest one they did was on 9/11 and was held in the Sully’s Bar space. While there, they had a moment of silence for the lives lost that day. They have several ideas for events in the future, including an Easter event and a few others they didn’t care to disclose.

“We like to keep things quiet until the last minute, so that different people get to attend the events.”

Another activity they do is what they call a space hike. This consists of members going to a place and helping others get the rewards that are there. “The Little Big Planet Playground was one we did. We helped over thirty people do the photo reward that day. It was amazing,” said deadbyfaith.

They also have given tours of personal spaces. Lockwood gave the club leaders a few of the Blaster’s Paradise spaces before they came out so that they could do this for them. “Cajun, lsutigersfan and I must have given one hundred and fifty tours apiece in a week,” said deadbyfaith.

Salute to the Troops

I asked them what is important to them when it comes to creating the events they hold. Music was the first response; they like to do things in public areas that have music like the MotorStorm, Presentation Podium, Guitar Hero VIP, and Sully’s Bar. Organization is also key; they schedule regular meetings about this and they assign different members to do different tasks. This type of delegating helps enormously in making these events a success. When you get a club going that is this large – about eighty plus members and three clubhouses – you need to have help if your goal is to have events two times or more a month.

To me, this club exemplifies what Home should be all about. They are using the tools they have been given to make Home a better place. Without thinking about themselves or the time involved, they continue to forge ahead in the belief that the people of the Home community deserve the best that each of us can give. Home means many things to many people; for the Louisiana Hurricanes, it means fun and relaxation — but also it means building community.
