We here at HomeStation Magazine are very excited to see the Home Community Volunteer program continue to grow and prosper; as Home continues to expand, both in terms of new content and an ever-growing population, we firmly believe that the HCV program serves a very relevant and pertinent need.
Consider for a moment: how daunting was Home the first time you signed in? Unless you had prior experience with other virtual worlds such as Second Life or Entropia, the experience of actually interacting with a virtual reality interface would be completely foreign. This, of course, is made all the more daunting by the virtual keypad interface; attempting to use it to communicate in Home, when surrounded by users armed with keyboards, is a bit like Lavinia communicating with a stick. It’s just an arduously slow process.
This doesn’t even cover the unspoken social mores of Home. The social stratification of users in default clothing versus purchased clothing. Trophy rankings. Glitching the bench. On and on. We’ve all been immersed in Home for so long that we can easily forget just how mystified we were by it all when we first signed in.
To me, a user with a GUIDE beacon represents increased revenue for Sony. How many new users can a Home Community Volunteer potentially help? How much money will they be inclined to spend as a result of this extra little bit of handholding? How many people, via word of mouth, can one satisfied Home user inform?
I’ve occasionally read on the Sony forum that some people think the HCV program is pointless, or an excuse to reward nepotism. The truth of the matter is that these accusers are lobotomy patients with disordered minds. In my personal observation, having had the good fortune to interact with some of the veteran volunteers, these people put in a hell of a lot of work with no other reward than the personal satisfaction that they’ve helped improve the Home experience for other people.
Congratulations to the new volunteers who have been inducted, and we hope to see further growth and expansion of the HCV program! The Home community will certainly benefit from having such a dedicated team working tirelessly to support it.
I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment Norse. These people deserve the thanks of all of us in Home even if we have never had to use them, if only because they help others like me who have had to help new people as well. The more hands we have out there to guide the easier it is on all of us.
i meet the one on the picture!(flower top and lill hat!^^)He help me on the theatre to understand how win a mysterious reward some months ago…
shame on me, i can’t remember his name!…
Nice article and thank you HSM for consistant support. Sorrow, The name of the guy in the flowered shirt is Flacotanner. I an the guy in Han Solo’s outfit.
