acquired a controlling
interest inSameer Agriculture
and Livestock Limited (SALL)
for anundisclosed amount.
Thedairy ismajority-
ownedby theKenyatta
family ofwhichKenya’s
current President Uhuru
Kenyatta is amember, while
SALL is a subsidiary company
of Sameer Group, aKenyan
conglomerate ownedbyNaushadMerali, one of Kenya’s richest businessmen.
In thenewdeal, Brooksidewill take over themanagement of SALL’s contracted farmers and
assets, includingproductionof its freshdairyproducts, whichhave a significantmarket share in
Uganda. Brooksidewill alsoupgrade all SALL’smilk cooling andprocessing facilities inUganda.
BrooksideDairyproduces freshmilk, long-lifemilk, yogurt, butter and ghee. The company
controlsmore than45%of theKenyanprocessedmilkmarket. In July 2014, Danone of France
acquired a40% stake in the company. Dubai-basedprivate equity shopAbraaj Capital owns
a 10% stake, while theKenyatta family own 50%.
