At first glance, The Vampire Diaries seems to cry "chick TV"
at the top of its lungs. The way-too
handsome vampire, Stefan, pines for a high school girl that resembles a long lost
love. There is even poetry once in a
while. It is so Seventeen. On closer examination, though, The Vampire
Diaries turns out to be a lot more guy-friendly than something like, say,
Twilight. Here's why.
These Vampires Do Not Sparkle
Where Twilight truly is a collection of Tiger Beat cutouts
with super powers, The Vampire Diaries vamps are far more in line with
traditional blood suckers; save for the occasional bout of histrionics. Damon (Ian Somerhalder) is a brutal bastard
with a real animal streak. Stefan just
kind of broods a little, but hey, there has to be a bit for everybody. The key is when these guys clash the fight
sequence doesn't look like it was choreographed by Bob Fosse.
Hot Chicks
The CW has paid very close attention to the need for hot
chicks. Yes, I realize they are supposed
to be high school girls, but they are all over 20. I checked.
This is one of the better aspects of TheCW, they have impeccable taste
in babes and The Vampire Diaries is a perfect example. You don't think all of these short skirts are
aimed at the teenage girl demo, do you?
Meat Eating
The Vampire Diaries features some healthy gore, another not-so-teen-girl friendly aspect of the show.
All of the blood and gore on The Vampire Diaries is clearly thrown
around to attract we manly gore hounds.
The carnivore in me is quite satisfied.
The Vampire Diairies airs on TheCW Thursdays at 8:00pm EST
