Mike Post. Neal Hefti. Mack David. These men, and others like them, have been responsible for some of the most enduring musical compositions of all time. And yet, their names are virtually unknown outside a small circle of cognoscenti. These are the men who create the theme songs for television shows - those picture-perfect jewels of tunecraft that rattle through our heads, unbidden, prompted by Proustian memory-biscuits. Stop anybody on the street and we'd bet they can sing you at least a dozen TV themes, from The Golden Girls to Bonanza and everywhere in between. Truly they are a part of our national collective unconsciousness, like Paul Bunyan and the Jersey Devil. In this article, we run down the eleven most enduring - a titanic task, no doubt. But using complex algorithms and precise measuring devices, we are confident in saying that these truly are the Best TV Themes of All Time.

The Greatest American Hero

The early '80s were a fertile breeding ground for a musical genre that has yet to be topped. Some call it "soft rock," some call it "adult contemporary," but we call it by its true name - "yacht rock." Created by legendary groups like Hall & Oates, Loggins & Messina and Christopher Cross, yacht rock made the crossover to the television airwaves with Joey Scarbury and Mike Post's theme for the 1981 action-comedy series The Greatest American Hero. Over a soaring base of strings, Scarbury sings lyrics that resonate in all of our souls. "Flying away on a wing and a prayer / who could it be? / Believe it or not, it's just me." The track hit #2 on the Billboard Top 40. making it one of the most successful TV themes of all time. The show, about a nebbish who finds a long-john suit that gives him super powers, is just about die for a revival - maybe William Katt can guest on Heroes.
