The Best TV Shows on Twitter

Some TV shows aren't just using Twitter to post broadcast times, they're using it to flesh out the world of the show. Here are some of the best.

Hi everybody, @azalben here... Some TV shows are content to stay on your television, while others have embraced the wild world of social networking – and not just to promote their show, but to flesh out the characters, and the world. Here’s some of the best TV shows on Twitter.

Trending Topics: After the cliffhanger ending of Castle’s last season, you’d expect the story would pick up on TV in the Fall. Wrong-o, friend-o. The writer’s of the show created an account for star Nathan Fillion’s character, mystery author Richard Castle, who has been tweeting over the Summer. He’s been continuing where the show left off, and also giving clues about what’s coming up over the next season. They did the same thing last Summer, making the Castle crew early adopters, and are doing an even better job this year. It’s a fun – and possibly even essential companion to the show. Plus, if you imagine Nathan Fillion reading it to you, it’s damn sexy.

Community

Trending Topics: Jumping into Twitter full throttle, Freshman comedy Community set up frequently updated – and hilarious – Twitter accounts for basically every character who’s been on the show, even one time or background characters. The most necessary is probably @AbedsTweets, which frequently updates with links to character Abed’s short films, most of which are parodies of episodes of Community. The show even tied into Twitter once, allowing users to vote on the name of Troy’s monkey. The winner? @AnniesB00bs.

Follow Friday: Creator @danharmon has a fantastic Twitter feed with insight about making the show... And a lot of poop jokes. Also, @MrDonaldGlover, who plays Troy, recently created a Twitter meme when he put himself up for the part of Spider-Man in the new movie.

Mad Men

Trending Topics: One of the first shows to embrace Twitter... And it wasn’t even real. Started as a marketing exercise by fans of the show, Twitter accounts started popping up for every character on Mad Men, interacting with each other, and reflecting events that were happening on TV. AMC, naturally, wasn’t pleased, and pulled the accounts – before their marketing company convinced them that free publicity was, you know, free. So the accounts continue to this day. We’ve given you two to start... Won’t you see how far down the rabbit hole goes?

Follow Friday: @MadMen_AMC is the only official Twitter account for the show – and while it’s a promo feed, it’s frequently updated with links and exclusives about our favorite olde timey ad execs.

Sh*t My Dad Says

Trending Topics: Okay, fine, this isn’t a TV show on Twitter, but it is the first Twitter feed that inspired a TV show (except @TheDickVanDykeShow, of course). And if you haven’t checked it out because of the overhype... Well, it’s really funny. In fact, despite the presence of William Shatner in the titular role of “The Dad Who Says Sh*t,” on TV, there’s no way the sitcom will be as good as the Twitter feed. Weird, I know.

Follow Friday: You should probably follow @WilliamShatner, of course. But I’m crossing my fingers that CBS launches their own, sanitized Twitter feed for the show. That would be amazing.

Dexter

Trending Topics: Similar to the Castle ARG, our favorite serial killer drama is, pun intended, fleshing out the world of the show this Summer with two websites and their accompanying Twitter feeds. The game follows an FBI Agent tracking down serial killers as she hunts them down – presumably leading into the new season of Dexter on September 26th. As of the writing of this article, both feeds have well under a hundred followers, so if you’re looking to get into something from the ground up, now’s your chance.

Follow Friday: @michael_c_hall, who plays Dexter, tweets frequently, as does the official account, @SHO_Dexter. You might want to also check out @juliebenz, though we suspect she’ll be tweeting more frequently about No Ordinary Family from here on out.
