The Best Moments From The Dexter Season 6 Premiere

After a somewhat lackluster season, Dexter is back with a vengeance. Showtime's serial killer hit made some big changes on the season premiere last night, and we'll help you make severed heads or snake tails of them.

I think we can all agree that Season 5 of Dexter was the low point of the series so far. The whole premise of the show isn't something that can sustain extended exploration - how many people can one guy kill, after all - but the whole Lumen subplot was grating and weird, especially when Deb could have discovered his identity but didn't. Wisely, the creators of the show are working hard to distance themselves from it, and if last night's season premiere tells us anything, it's that they're doing a solid job. Here are the moments and elements that have us the most psyched for the new season.

One Year Later

So the big deal with Dexter after the last season is that the show is skipping a whole year into the future. Moving ahead has given the show a chance to jettison annoying baggage and make Harrison more of a character and less of a plot device. When we pick up, a few things have changed. Angel and LaGuerta's marriage is over, for one, but Quinn and Deb are still together. Dexter has bought the apartment next to his old one and hired Angel's sister as a live-in nanny, which means he can come and go fairly undetected. Lumen? Nobody mentions her the whole damn episode, which means that Season 5 is basically forgotten.

The First Kill

One of the most satisfying things about the first season of Dexter was how it would often open episodes with our hero performing kills on scumbags who deserved it. Season 6 brought us back to that tradition, with Dexter setting up two ambulance drivers who have been killing patients to sell their body parts. Of course, his plan was absurd and ridiculous (how did he know that the guys who came to pick him up would be the exact bad guys?), but it was still nice to see him back in top form icing scumbags. Obviously he's still confident that his mission is a just one and the Code still stands.

Moving On Up

LaGuerta gets a promotion this episode, continuing her rise up the ladder. But she didn't get it by working hard - instead, she found a little black book at a busted escort service that contained some incriminating details about Deputy Chief Matthews. Instead of turning it in, she decides to do a little old-fashioned blackmail, and it seems to have worked. This is an interesting move because she's always been one of Dexter's champions in the Department - it remains to be seen if this is just a way to get her out of the series or if it will have further repercussions. And, of course, there's now an open seat that several people (including Angel) are gunning for.

Double Trouble

Without a doubt, the high point of the episode was meeting this season's antagonists - a duo of religious serial killers played by Edward James Olmos and Colin Hanks. They murder a fruit vendor, disembowel him, leave his intestines in his scale and replace his guts with a bunch of snakes. The bad guys on the show are always way more creative than Dexter is, and this pair is no different. When the cops find the victim, he has the Greek letters Alpha and Omega stitched onto his skin. Unraveling the mystery of the season's killer - and how they'll interact with Dexter - is the best part of the show, and these guys have tons of potential.

Masuka Jr.

Vince Masuka is one of those characters where the show just doesn't know what to do with him. As comic relief, he's good for a laugh or two, but six seasons in and they've got to find something besides cheap sexual jokes for Dexter's lab buddy to do. This season seems to have found it, as he's now teaching at a local college and selecting one of his students to be an intern. Surprisingly, he doesn't tap the hot chick for the job, but rather a slovenly fat dude. Unfortunately, chubbo faints during a particularly gross moment involving snakes and the girl is in instead. New blood in the lab - previously one of Dexter's most private spaces - is definitely a good idea.
