Summer TV: Real Lesbians, Desperate Vampires and Cocky Teens

With networks gearing up for Summer TV season, we've got the word on ten new shows that may - or may not - be worth your time.

TV watching is hard! Especially during the Summer, when there’s things like barbecues, and swimming, and traveling with your three best friends to see a dead body just past the train tracks to think about. So we’re making it easy for you, running down the new June TV shows that may be worth your precious time.

Hot in Cleveland (TV Land)

The Stars: Betty White, Jane Leeves, Valerie Bertinelli, Wendie Malick

The Pitch: Golden Girl minus three Golden Girls, plus three Designing Women

The Verdict: Betty White is the hottest member of this cast, which is crazy. But all four women are sitcom vets, and the show promises to be a surprisingly old school, fun half hour about three LA trend-obsessed women who end up boarding with Betty White, prompting them to start a Facebook campaign to get her to host SNL. Just kidding about the last part. (Premieres June 16th)

The Stars: Er...

The Pitch: Um...

The Verdict: Let’s be honest... You’re going to tune into this for one reason, and one reason only: to see women interact in honest relationships, in different and fascinating ways. Right? RIGHT? Fingers crossed we get a The Real Weeds, next, and the first episode they’re just all hardcore arrested. (Premieres June 20th)

The Gates (ABC)

The Stars: Rhona Mitra

The Pitch: Desperate Housewives with vampires

The Verdict: Seriously, ABC? I mean, kudos for getting Rhona Mitra, who took over for Kate Beckinsale in the third Underworld movie, so we’re gonna give you a little vampire geek cred there. But wowee, this looks transparent. We’ve already got True Blood on our DVRs, so we’ll pass on this, thanks. (Premieres June 20th)

The Neistat Brothers

The Neistat Brothers (HBO)

The Stars: Casey Neistat, Van Neistat

The Pitch: It’s like Home Movies, but with actual home movies

The Verdict: Probably the weirdest thing HBO has done recently (unless you count continuing to pick up new episodes of Entourage), the show is strange enough to watch, but not accessible enough to keep watching after one season. Though we’re happy to be wrong.

Green Room (Showtime)

The Stars: Paul Provenza

The Pitch: The Aristocrats, but every week.

The Verdict: ...Which makes sense, because Provenza, who hosts this show, also made the movie The Aristocrats. The sort-of talk show delves into the backroom conversations of comedians and it works. Probably the best not-a-talk show since Jon Favreau’s Dinner For Five.
