No matter how good you are at bumping, landing flat on your back always hurts. Powerbombs up the PQ (pain quotient, natch), by hurling an unlucky individual to the mat from the shoulders of another wrestler.
There are a number of different variations, but all of them look really unpleasant due to the significant period of freefall, which means that there's little to be done to protect the move's recipient. Additionally, if you want the powerbomb to look any good, you can't just drop your opponent - you have to throw them. Especially nasty powerbombs can occur on a harder surface, such as the floor outside the ring or entrance ramp, or even through a conveniently positioned table.
