Lost: Behind the Music

Music to press the button to, courtesy of LOST

We love Lost for many reasons - its complex characters, original storyline and deep mythology, all of which we enjoy dissecting like Arzt with an arachnid. But let's not overlook the intriguing musical selections the show features, which are often dripping with irony and double meaning. Sure, master composer Michael Giacchino's score is amazing but it's really the inclusion of songs like "Moonlight Serenade" and "Rump Shaker" that make Lost a pop culture phenomena, brimming over with aural Easter eggs.

If you were to present a potential girlfriend with a mixtape filled with these songs, she'd probably think you're a soulful, confused, depressed, brooding, angry country fan who enjoys forays into old school alt rock and frat jams - aka Jack. It's an eclectic mix to be sure, but we're convinced that listening to the songs presented here in one sitting will explain it all - or at least give you musical schizophrenia.

Downtown - Petula Clark

"Downtown, things'll be great when you're Downtown, no finer place for sure, Downtown, everything's waiting for you"

First heard in: "A Tale of Two Cities" (Season 3 Premiere) - as Juliet prepares for book club.

We may have thought Juliet was "downtown" when we first heard this song, and in a sense she was, if you mean downtown New Otherton. Much like Desmond's Mama Cass moment in the season two premiere, we're somewhat misled to think we're watching a scene off-island. But of course, now we know there's more to the island than mangos and palms trees - like hatches, four-toed statues and a book club run by Juliet. Nothing like a deep discussion on the merits of "Carrie" and some burnt muffins. Way to go Juliet. Ben wouldn't even read that in the bathroom! But he would eat Juliet's burnt muffins, we bet.

Also heard in: "One of Us" (Season 3, Episode 16) - in Juliet's car

We hear this song again in Juliet's car as she and sis Rachel ride over to the Mittelos Bioscience center. It's only fitting that Juliet is listening to a song recorded in 1964 on her way to meet the folks who'll be sending her to work on the time traveling island.

Meaning: Aside from the obvious irony of Petula Clark's cheery lyrics as Juliet holds back tears and fumbles muffins, it is here that we get our first look at life in New Otherton, which is kind of the equivalent of "downtown" on the island. And we eventually learn that the lyrics above were quite apropo of Juliet's situation on the island, as she was brought there thanks to Richard Alpert - who felt that her ability to impregnate a male mouse made her Mittelos Bioscience material and wooed her with the promise of innovative research opportunities...and his smokey eyes.
