At long last, Buffy Summers is finally returning home.
No, not to Sunnydale, but rather Deadline has learned that in a surprising twist, The CW has picked up to series Sarah Michelle Gellar's TV return vehicle Ringer, originally slated for development at sister network CBS! Gellar had previously called home to The CW's former identities as The WB and UPN during her breakout role as the titular character of Buffy the Vampire Slayer during its initial run.
The news of Gellar's series being picked up arrives on the same week as some pretty impressive and brutal cancellations as well as renewals, as the various networks ready their Fall slates for the upfronts.
As previously reported Kristoffer Polaha has the role opposite the former Buffy star's new series, which sees Gellar as Bridget, a troubled young woman who hides from the mafia by inhabiting the life of her deceased (but wealthy) twin sister Siobahn. Siobahn's life is not without its own perils however, as producer Peter Traugott describes the show :
“It’s an edgy thriller about redemption and about revenge. There’s a point of view of two twin sisters who grew apart over a tragedy in their past. And one now seeks redemption and the other one seeks revenge. The sister who is seeking redemption has had a much more troubled life. When her fancy pants sister disappears, she takes over. She’s living the life of her more successful sister only to come to find out that her life is equally as fraught with danger and complication. Bridget takes on her persona, only to come to find out that they have a hit out on her as well.”
Polaha, formerly of The CW's Life Unexpected plays Henry, the unemployed husband of Siobhan's closest friend, with whom the wealthy sister who also happens to be having an affair with. Unaware of the sister-swap, Henry finds himself dejected by her change in behavior and demands that she choose between him and Siobahn's husband, played by the Fantastic 4's Ioan Gruffudd.
