As far as television premises go, Community is really a bit of a walking cliche on paper. A collection of ragtag community college students come together to study for their Spanish class, but end up learning more about each other and the world around them. Community has always enjoyed taking shots at the super popular Glee by proxy using Greendale’s own glee club. Everyone in the study group seems to have a negative opinion of glee club, despite once filling in for them one year after everyone in the club was tragically killed in a bus crash. Unfortunately for viewers, this tenure in the glee club is only mentioned in flashback. Show creators and cast finally broke down and gave the fans what they wanted: a musical Christmas episode.
By far the highlight of the episode was Annie’s bizarre burlesque-like number she performs for Jeff. Being Jewish, she’s not as familiar with the holiday as other characters and asks Jeff to explain it to her. The number starts with Annie being a campy naive sexpot and eventually concludes with her just speaking gibberish as she gets less and less articulate. It’s an absurd moment that is both entertaining and takes a fun look at the strange sexualization that sometimes occurs in the entertainment world.
