Best Girls On TV

30 Rock, Female Television Leads, Tina Fey, Chuck, Lost, Buffy, Terminator

by Scott Harris, Hilary Rothing, and Rene Rosa

We love the ladies. Am I right, fellas? And you know who else loves the ladies? Television executives. In recent years, women on television have begun carrying television shows in increasing numbers. Gone are the days when you needed a square jawed, red blooded American man to bring home the ratings. With shows like Sex in the City and Buffy the Vampire Slayer having paved the way, these days the tube is filled with big time females pushing massive product over the airways. On cable you've got Holly Hunter on Saving Grace, Kyra Sedgwick on The Closer and Glenn Close on Damages all using purse power to crush enemies and thrill viewers.

And those are just the shows that we don't watch. Television is filled with strong, interesting women in leading roles, so we thought this would be a good time to review some of our current and past favorites. Of course, there's another trend these days dominating television - the ensemble. So some of these great actresses have to share the screen with a bunch of dopey men. But whether they get the whole spotlight or merely steal it from their hairier counterparts, we're happy to spotlight their talent on this list of our favorite Girls On TV.

Yvonne Strahovski

Actress Bio: Yvonne Strahovski is Australian, which I bet you didn't know. Her given last name is Strzechowski, which is a traditional Australian name meaning "left fielder". Yvonne was in Hollywood for all of three days before she landed the role on Chuck.

Character Details: Yvonne plays federal agent Sarah Walker, who is an extremely hot blonde, which in acting terms is pretty "in the box" for Yvonne. Sarah spends much of the series trying to help Chuck understand the computer technology inside his brain as well as the fact that, realistically, he has no shot in hell.

You Go, Girl: And then, out of nowhere, came Yvonne Stahovski. Firstly, we had no idea from watching the show that she was Australian; her Americanese is excellent. Secondly, she does an admirable job of kicking ass while remaining emotionally attractive, which is a tough gig. To be honest, if we had a hot female secret agent shooting dudes next to us, we wouldn't be turned on, we'd be on our third pair of underwear by noon. The fact that Yvonne maintains her appeal - and puts up with Chuck's passive aggressive moonfaces - gives her top props in our book.
