Eragon

Release date: December 15, 2006

The Pitch:

A farm boy embraces his destiny as the Dragon Rider who will free his people from the rule of a tyrant.

Why You Need It:

Yes, Eragon is silly and derivative, a film that could really benefit from not taking itself so seriously. But it also has an awesome fire-breathing dragon (with the voice of Rachel Weisz, at that), John Malkovich hamming it up as a villain named Galbatorix and Jeremy Irons indulging in his umpteenth Sagely Mentor with Sword gig. Despite its big Hollywood budget, Eragon can't help but look cheap, but it's got a big heart - even if it doesn't know quite where to put it. Despite the film's shortcomings, there's much fun here for fantasy fans, with a truly weird performance by Robert Carlyle as an evil wizard named Durza.

Talent:

Stefen Fangmeier (director), Ed Speleers, Sienna Guillory, Jeremy Irons, Robert Carlyle, John Malkovich, Rachel Weisz (voice), Garrett Hedlund, Alum Armstrong, Djimon Hounsou.
