Durza is a Shade, a dark sorcerer possessed by the spirits he summons. He was once an orphaned desert nomad by the name of Carsaib, who became a sorcerer's apprentice. After his master is killed by raiders, Carsaib summons spirits to avenge him. The spirits become too much for the apprentice to control and they possessed him, turning him into Durza, who now serves under the tyrannical Galbatorix. Durza is tasked with retrieving the dragon's egg stolen by the beautiful elf princess, Arya, which makes him one of the main obstacles in the path of the prophesied hero-to-be, the young farm boy known as Eragon. The only way to kill a Shade is to stab him through the heart, and Eragon soon discovers that's a difficult task indeed.
