The soul of a serial killer is transferred to a doll; murder and mayhem ensue.
Because it's great. The Chucky movies got goofier with each installment before collapsing into complete self-referential meta catastrophe with the fifth adventure, Seed of Chucky (2004), but in the beginning, Child's Play was a nasty, creepy and extremely clever horror outing. The puppetry and other related special effects are top-notch, as is the occasional low-level POV cinematography, and Chris Sarandon as a Chicago detective seems genuinely amused by it all. Brad Dourif is obviously having a blast, bringing an over-the-top fury to what would be one of his most iconic roles - in this first installment, he has no idea yet that this gig would be his meal ticket for the next 15+ years.
Tom Holland (director), Brad Dourif, Catherine Hicks, Chris Sarandon, Alex Vincent, Dinah Manoff, Tommy Swerdlow, Jack Colvin, Neil Giuntoli, Juan Ramirez.
