G. I. Joe's Best Roadblock Moments

The Biloxi-born Roadblock is getting his moment in the sun with the new G.I. Joe movie, so we thought it would be good to show you exactly why he's always been one of our favorite Joes.

Born Marvin Hinton, the Joe known as Roadblock has been one of the property's most dependable soldiers for several decades. In the upcoming G.I. Joe: Retaliation, he'll come to the big screen for the first time, played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Roadblock is a pretty cool dude who has figured into many of the greatest battles against COBRA, so we decided to give you a little dossier on his greatest moments. Think of it as military intelligence.

High Voltage

The second of the 80s cartoon PSAs that starred Roadblock might be even better than the stranger danger one, because it deals with kids doing something catastrophically stupid. I don't know about you, but I was never tempted even once to jump my BMX bike over downed power lines. I know what electricity can do. It's handy that Roadblock just happened to be passing by with his weird wire-grabbing claw thing. What do you even call that?

In Space

By the time the G.I. Joe comics started winding to a close, they were mostly just an excuse to introduce new toy lines. They still had moments of greatness, though, such as the bizarre multi-part storyline where a team of Joes went to outer space to battle an army of robots alongside the Oktober Guard. Roadblock was one of the soldiers chosen to blast off, and he was less than impressed with zero gravity. It did, however, give him the opportunity to carry even bigger guns, so that was cool.

Resolute

2009's G.I. Joe: Resolute was one of the cooler takes on the property in recent years. This animated series aired on Adult Swim and was written by comics scribe Warren Ellis, who was given virtual free reign to do whatever he wanted with the characters. The end product was a stylish, hard-edged series that gave our man Roadblock a chance to shine. In the final raid on the HAARP base, Roadblock and Gung-Ho team up to take out Destro and the Baroness, and the results are awesome.

Recipe For Destruction

Roadblock's love of cooking carries through to the modern G.I. Joe comics as well, and in the last issue of G.I. Joe: Frontline, he really showed his kitchen skills. After getting his own syndicated cooking show, Roadblock is struggling to make ends meet, until a mysterious investor pumps some funds into the production. Of course, it's COBRA, and they proceed to dispatch the Drednoks to wreck the joint and smash his dreams. But this man's dreams are not so easily smashed, as he opens up a can of whoop-ass on those thugs and gets his highest ratings ever in the process.

Sure Was Toasty

The two-part episode There's No Place Like Springfield closed out the first season of G.I. Joe, and it did so with a bang. Written by famously demented comic book scribe Steve Gerber, the plot involved a COBRA plan to screw with the mind of Shipwreck using the nasty technology of Dr. Mindbender. One of the most memorable scenes involves our man Roadblock driving into a mysterious car wash and then melting into a blob of protoplasmic goo. That's some heavy WTF for a kid's show.
