G. I. Joe's Best Roadblock Moments

The Biloxi-born Roadblock is getting his moment in the sun with the new G.I. Joe movie, so we thought it would be good to show you exactly why he's always been one of our favorite Joes.

Born Marvin Hinton, the Joe known as Roadblock has been one of the property's most dependable soldiers for several decades. In the upcoming G.I. Joe: Retaliation, he'll come to the big screen for the first time, played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Roadblock is a pretty cool dude who has figured into many of the greatest battles against COBRA, so we decided to give you a little dossier on his greatest moments. Think of it as military intelligence.

Red Rocket's Glare

One of the best things about the original G.I. Joe cartoon was that it gave each member of the team their own episode. Roadblock and his family figured into "Red Rocket's Glare," which also had one of the most bizarre plots ever. COBRA used their extra cash to purchase the Red Rocket fast food chain, intending to use the restaurants as fronts for missile bases. But Roadblock's parents don't want to sell, and the stage is set for a deep-fried throwdown.

Capturing Cobra Commander

Roadblock figured into the comic books as well on several occasions. Being the only Joe who could single-handedly tote a heavy machine gun made him an excellent asset on a number of missions. Early in the Marvel Comics run, the team had Cobra Commander tracked to Switzerland and set up a covert op to bring him in. Roadblock was instrumental in the mission, stopping the COBRA agents from escaping and seizing the evil leader. How did he do it? By standing in front of his car and shooting the crap out of it, of course.

Stranger Danger

The DIC cartoons were notorious for the brief public service announcements at the end of them, where the Joes would interact with ordinary kids and give them important safety lessons. Roadblock actually starred in two of them, and both of them were freaking awesome. In this bit, a young gentleman makes the horrible decision to give a stranger his address over the phone. He's not going to send you a free pizza, kid. Thankfully, Roadblock comes along to set him straight. He's like Chris Hansen, only he has a gun.

Save The Flag

Later on in the Marvel series, Roadblock is one of a squad of Joes valiantly struggling to restore order in the fictional Latin American country of Sierra Gordo. After years of chaos and one military dictatorship after another, the country finally collapsed into all-out revolution. While trying to save the American ambassador, Roadblock meets a rebel who's about to torch an American flag. Naturally, this doesn't sit well with our hero, and he lets the dude know that one spark means the end of his face.

On Vacation

Even when he's on vacation, Roadblock has to kick some ass. G.I. Joe #154 was a solo Roadblock issue, which showed the part-time chef heading to Texas for a chili cook-off. But when he's made by COBRA agents at the airport, they shanghai him onto a plane... of death. Naturally, our man proceeds to smash his way through the scumbags on the jet before parachuting out the back and throwing an armed missile into the cargo hold, exploding the plane and killing everybody aboard. Now that's a spicy bowl of chili!
