80s Horror Movies That Need To Be Remade

Sure, Hollywood's remake fever is a little annoying, but there are some movies that could wind up being pretty awesome with some 21st century flavor added. Here are eleven 80s horror flicks that need remakes.

Remakes are all the rage. Videogames have started getting in on the act, but movies are still the primary the driver in the remake economy. It's hard to blame studios (too much) because they are risk-averse, and remakes are as-sure bets as they can make. When a consumer knows a property or movie, it's a safe bet that they will at least entertain the idea of going to see a new version of the same film they loved. Some revenue is better than no revenue.

The horror genre provides plenty of room for remakes; there are cult classics, forgotten gems and underappreciated masterpieces that can get new life and find a new audience with a remake. We assembled a list of 80s horror movies that need to be remade, to bring to light, some movies that shouldn't be stuck in just one decade.

Altered States

Ken Russell's 1980 psychological chiller Altered States is practically begging for a remake, given the amount of dabbling human beings have been doing with their consciousness since the movie was released. The flick tells the tale of a psychology professor (played by William Hurt in his first movie role) who experiments with sensory deprivation and finds his body and mind undergoing horrific devolution. The original is creepy and horrifying, but it's also sometimes hamstrung by the hokey visual effects. We'd love to see what a creature shop with real oomph could do with it.

Society

If you've never seen Society, Brian Yuzna's 1989 directoral debut, get yourself to your local purveyor of weird videos ASAP. This grim body horror flick is gasping for a remake in these recession-wary times. Ordinary teen Bill Whitney seems to have it all - he's rich, popular and doing well in school. But somehow, he just doesn't fit in. As he tries to get to the bottom of the matter, he finds out that things are way, way weirder than he ever imagined. A classic tale of the rich feeding on the poor and in these times, a remake would be totally sweet.

The Beast Within

1982's exploitation cheapie The Beast Within was remarkably terrifying for the time. The plot is a slow burner, but it's a good one. When a young couple's car breaks down in rural Mississippi, the woman is brutally raped by a mysterious assailant, who is never caught. Fast forward seventeen years into the future and the spawn of that union is entering puberty and becoming violently ill as a result of a defective pituitary gland. The family returns to the scene of the crime to track down the rapist and take him in for examination, but things quickly go very, very wrong. It's an unusual and very Lovecraftian setup that could work well with today's genetically-obsessive culture.

Pin

Sandor Stern's terrifyingly weird 1989 slasher Pin is one of the most unique concepts the horror genre has ever seen. A doctor uses a life-sized medical dummy to explain facts about the human body to his two children. Unfortunately, one of those children is a schizophrenic and his relationship with the dummy - who he names Pin - is just a little unhealthy. There are plenty of movies where inanimate objects are terrifying, but Pin takes it to a whole new level. A remake would be great to bring this awesome flick to the world's attention.

Sleepaway Camp

The 80s was the era of the slasher, and dozens of uninspired flicks with masked killers carving up teenagers clogged theaters. Not one of them was quite as disturbing as Sleepaway Camp, which has enjoyed a new life on video and DVD. The basic plotline is simple - kids go to camp, kids die. But it's the twists and turns along the way that make this such a sweet ride. Not only are the deaths brutal and spectacular, but the movie's final twist - which I won't spoil for you here - is a true mindbender that is just waiting for someone to resuscitate.
