One of the most ambitious mods available for the game, the Skyrim HD project aims to go through the entire game and replace each and every texture with a high-resolution one. Only certain areas have been completed, but the difference is stunning. Environments that looked good before now look absolutely unbelievable. Although it's probably going to be some time before the entire game world is redone, you might as well get in on the ground floor now.

Here's another aesthetic improvement that's not necessary, but looks pretty cool. The Realistic Smoke and Embers Skyrim mod completely changes the way the game handles fire, smoke and ash, making for insanely impressive special effects. By using high-resolution textures, it makes fire look a thousand times better for very little performance hit.

Some of these mods are pretty easy to describe: they do one thing and they do it well. The Tytanis mod, however, as you might deduce from the name, is big. There's so much crazy crap folded into this file that you'll think you're playing a whole new game. You like crafting? This Skyrim mod throws in a staggering number of new craftable items, hidden objects and lets you dual-wield two-handed weapons, amongst everything else it adds in.
