We all know that The Elder Scrolls history gets better with mods, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has proven to be no exception. The latest installment in the series is one of the most epic games of the year, but there's always room for improvement. If you haven't modded your install up, here is why that will make the game that much better. Sadly, these Skyrim mods are only for the PC version of the game - console owners are out of luck.

Val's Crafting Meltdown

One of the biggest annoyances of Skyrim is finding yourself loaded down with all kinds of miscellaneous crap that you've picked up on the way. A lot of the time, you'll be carrying items that your character can do nothing with, but you don't just want to let them go to waste. The Val's Crafting Meltdown Skyrim mod adds the very useful ability to smelt down items for raw materials, letting you forge things you can actually use. It also gives you the ability to craft arrows, which is essential.

Enhanced Distant Terrain

While some of these mods are designed to make the game more fun to play, many others are just designed to give graphical facelifts to certain areas. Case in point, the awesome Enhanced Distant Terrain Skyrim mod, which takes the game's already impressive draw distance and makes far-off things look nicer with more detail in the texture maps and some impressive noise effects. It won't make fighting dragons any easier, but it's good for screenshots.

World Map In Full 3D

One of the biggest selling points of all of the Elder Scrolls games is the sheer size of the game world - these are big-ass games, with big-ass continents to explore. The World Map In Full 3D Skyrim mod is great for getting a clear visual picture of where you're exploring. It essentially lets you zoom the camera out, Google Earth style, and peep in on virtually any exterior location in the game. It's a pretty awesome experience and really makes the game a little more doable.

Glowing Ore Veins

Mining is one of the best ways to get raw materials for all kinds of good stuff, but finding it in the wild can be a little tricky. In the vanilla game, veins of ore pretty much just look like any other rocks, making prospecting somewhat annoying. The Glowing Ore Veins Skyrim mod brings a little touch-up to the world, making any rock that has valuable materials inside have a soft, subtle glowing effect. That way there's not so much annoying hunting around to find the good stuff.

QD Inventory

Bethesda is very good at a whole bunch of things, but interface isn't really one of them. Scrolling through your swag in Skyrim can be insanely irritating, so thankfully there's the QD Inventory Skyrim mod to make things a little easier. This totally replaces the existing inventory screen with a much more informative version that displays the stats of every item without needing to select them, as well as organizing your stuff by category. It's not pretty, but it works damn well.
