Best Movie Ever: Swingers

The low budget indie film that changed nightlife in the 1990s comes to Blu-ray.

If you were a young, single man in the mid-1990s and went out for a night on the town with your male friends, it was a guarantee that someone shouted "Vegas!"

You might have been going to a bowling alley in Edison, New Jersey, but no, in that context - out with your buddies, hoping to meet some "beautiful babies," telling one another you were "money" - you were indeed going to Vegas. We were all going to Vegas.

The independently produced film that gave us Jon Favreau, Vince Vaughn, Heather Graham, Ron Livingston and director Doug Liman tapped into a zeitgeist of careless youth when the world's biggest problem was a stain on a blue Gap dress. It was a curious time without war, an unstoppable economy and a blip in the pop culture that embraced a hepcat era of cigars and big band music (the vibe of Swingers paved the way for films like Ocean's Eleven, to be sure).

Now you can enjoy this 16mm classic as it makes its way to a high-res transfer on Blu-ray. Here's a guide to remind you why it is the best movie ever.

Message Received

If ever there was a guy who would benefitted from texting.

Favreau's encounter with the world's most difficult answering machine is a nightmare out of Franz Kafka by way of Charlie Chaplin. An unending stream of cut-off apologies and explanations destroys any opportunity for a post-meeting date. You kids today don't know how easy you have it!

Goodfellas Gag

The bootstraps passion of indie cinema triumphs in this tweak at auteurism!

The Swingers can go in through the back just like Marty Scorsese can. Sure, the shot will look like crap, but hey, we're young, clever and invincible. Vegas, baby, Vegas!

Swingers

There may not be the digital pictures up on Facebook to prove it, but yes, for a brief flash dressing like this guy and listening to big band music was the hippest thing you can do.

Was it ironic? You know, I'm not even sure anymore. Why don't you go to the official Big Bad Voodoo Daddy website and tell me.

Vince Vaughn's Dance

No night out carousing with your friends can end without a trip to the diner for a pre-dawn breakfast.

Vince Vaughn kills it throughout Swingers but this was the scene that ensured he'd become a star. It's not just that he got up on the table and danced like an idiot. It's that, beyond the posturing, you can see the pride he has in his friend. Mikey got a girl's number and, dammit, nothing can stop a proud knucklehead like Vaughn from doing a victory rhumba.

"Vegas, baby, Vegas" may've been the most commonly quoted line, but the self-aware "I'm the a**hole in the place" is the one that has the most heart.

Fun Little Baby Games

Swingers concludes with one extra moment - Trent convinced he's about to score with a beautiful baby giving him "a vibe."

The punchline is, of course, that there's an actual infant in the booth, and Trent is just a putz. Plus, Mike's got a date lined up with the beautiful baby he met in the bar. He's absolutely over his ex from New York, just like Ron Livingston said he'd be, and everyone loves listening to Tony Bennett.

Perfect ending. Perfect film.
