Deadliest Green Lantern Villains

The life of a Green Lantern is far from easy. Want proof? Here's a list of the deadliest Green Lantern villains of all time.

There's a lot of things that can take down a space cop - trees, colors of the spectrum and rapists. Hell, even little blue men can do quite a number on a Green Lantern. We assembled a list of the deadliest Green Lantern villains; foes that are so strong, weird or overpowering that they gave the Green Lanterns a run for their money.

Sinestro might be the best known of Green Lantern's foes, but one of the deadliest in the pantheon of Green Lanterns was wood. Unassuming trees, cast into weapons, were one of the worst things to happen to the original Green Lantern, Alan Scott. It was like Kryptonite, except in infinite more supply. If you didn't know that fun fact, you should probably read on and learn about the deadliest Green Lantern villains of all time.

Wood

We had to get this one out of the way and we couldn't very well ignore the Golden Age gem of heroes' "weaknesses." The original Green Lantern, Alan Scott, had a very basic weakness: wood. In fact, it was whatever the author wanted it to be that month, but mostly it revolved around wood and wood-related weapons criminals would use against him. This is the sort of thing that seems silly to us today, but I guess back in the Golden Age, wood was a serious threat.

Yellow

We had to get it out of the way so we could move on.

Originally, the Guardians imprisoned Parallax, the entity of fear, in the central power battery of Oa when they were learning how to wield the power of will. This caused all of the Green Lantern rings and corpsmen to have a susceptibility to the color yellow, no matter how trivial the color's appearance. Of course, this fact didn't come out until sometime after the mid-90s and the "Emerald Twilight" arc in Green Lantern when Hal Jordan drained the central power battery and a new ring--sans yellow impurity--was made for Kyle Rayner.

Still, the impurity was around for the better part of 44 years before being taken away and later explained as a part of the Parallax problem after Green Lantern: Rebirth. It still makes its way into fandom jokes, like in Frank Miller's All-Star Batman.

The Guardians of the Universe

Not just during the events of The War of the Green Lanterns when ex-Guardian Krona forcibly made the other Guardians into the hosts for the Spectrum Entities but far prior when they planned on using Manhunters--uh, also originally with Krona, who pioneered a power "gauntlet" of sorts--instead of the Green Lantern Corps.

The Guardians are the best and worst thing for the Corps. On one hand, they know everything and have the universe's best interest in mind. But they've been really crappy when it comes to using common sense or doing anything but hiding behind the skirt of the Green Lantern Corps.

The Guardians remind me of all those old cop movies from the 70s and 80s where the police chief would slap the wrists of whomever, but applaud them when they got the job done. You have to wonder what they were thinking when they got upset with Hal Jordan at the end of The War of the Green Lanterns; Jordan overpowered Krona, the same Krona that killed the Guardians and the entirety of the Corps before, and they do the whole police chief act on him. That's not a new thing for Hal.

Hank Henshaw, aka Cyborg Superman

It takes balls to take on Superman, but it takes big, brass balls to take on Superman, partner up with Mongul and blow up an entire city in order to make a copy of Warworld just for shits and giggles. Hence why Hank Henshaw is here, or as he's better known: the Cyborg Superman. See, Hank wants nothing more than to die, but he can't because over the years he's become so powerful that his "soul" is more of a virus capable of taking over any machine than anything else. He's gone from a Yellow Lantern, due to the fear he could produce, to becoming the head of the Manhunters since he wants nothing more than to eradicate life and control it when he's not hoping for death.

Add in the fact that he also experimented on the Alpha Lanterns, the Internal Affairs of the Green Lanterns, and forced more than a few to become cyborgs and robots he could control and the Corps has it out for him. Did we mention he led the Manhunters to destroy Earth during the Sinestro Corps War?

Basically, Hank Henshaw has a death wish and it's hard to kill a guy that can hide in machinery. Something the Green Lantern Corps is still dealing with, but who knows in the new DC 52 Universe.

Sinestro

Ah, the original magnificent pink bastard. Abin Sur's best friend and Hal Jordan's mentor, Thaal Sinestro once kept his home planet of Korugar the safest in his sector. That is until Hal Jordan came to see how he did it and found a fascist dictator where he once thought his friend would be. Drummed out of the Corps, Sinestro embraced the opposite end of the spectrum (yellow/fear) to take revenge on the Guardians and the Green Lantern Corps.

Sinestro would become the Magneto to Hal's Professor X, which is a terrible analogy since Hal Jordan totally is a space pedophile. Sinestro would become far more than that as he murdered entire planets and did his best to spread fear throughout the universe.
