When something changes with a work order—the quantity changes, component items are damaged or unusable, or you decide to complete only part of the work order—you can dekit or scrap components you kitted to the work order. On the Dekit/Scrap page, you can record components you're scrapping and components you're returning to stock.
Dekitting and scrapping components helps keep your bookkeeping accurate. When you kit components, they go from stock (on the shelf) to WIP (work in progress). This change to inventory gets recorded in your company's GL (general ledger). If you don't dekit or scrap components you don't use, they stay in WIP and mess up the balances in the GL.
Dekit components from a work order when you need to record that you're not using components you previously kitted to this work order.
Usually you'll dekit components if you kitted more than you needed to complete the work order. You'll scrap components if they're damaged or expired, or for some other reason couldn't be used in your manufacturing process.
Note: If you find you're having to dekit/scrap a lot of kitted components, consider using backflush components instead of kit components to decrease the amount of record keeping you have to do.
To dekit or scrap components of a work order, you must have the following:
