As the Philippines hosts APEC in 2015 — the last
time was in 1996 — the theme is “Building Inclusive
Economies, Building a Better World”. According to
the 2012 World Risk Report published by the United
Nations University Institute of Environment and
Human Security (UNU-EHS), the Philippines ranks
third in a worldwide survey of countries most at risk
of disaster. In spite of recent natural disasters, such
as Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda in 2013, the Philippines
remains resilient and is economically stronger than
ever before.
This month’s big meeting is all about how APEC can help build a
sustainable future for the world economy. It all starts with a plan:
Map out
a plan for
getting
everyone
prepared now
that disasters,
especially
natural ones,
are the new
normal
Focus on the
service sector
and how
to support
it — everyone
stands to
benefit
because
we all use
services every
day
Emphasize the
importance of
small and medium
enterprises, which
comprise 97% of
businesses in the
APEC region,
employ over
half of APEC’s
workforce and
contribute to 65%
of employment
Develop a
framework for
engaging with
the private
sector
