A big bash
Visit Zamboanga City in October
and catch the Hermosa Festival
Started in the mid-’80s to
mark the feast day of the
Nuestra Señora La Virgen
del Pilar, the festival has
since evolved to become a
celebration of the city’s culture
and history. So not only will
you get to know Zamboanga
City and its friendly people
through a combination of
lively and solemn religious
events, you’ll also discover
why it’s been called Asia’s
Latin City, the City of Flowers
and even the sardine capital
of the Philippines. This year’s
theme is “Junto y Unido:
Celebración de Harmonia y
Buen Amistad (Together and
United: Celebrating Harmony
and Friendship)”.
Taking place from October
1-12, Hermosa promises
a schedule packed with
activities like processions
and novena masses, a
vinta
(traditional south-western
Mindanao boat) racing
competition, art exhibits,
street parties, a
mascota
(formal Spanish colonial
gown) design contest, a food
and Chavacano song festival
and much more. Time to book
that trip now.

ACTION-PACKED
Processions, parades, pageants, music, sports… Naga City’s annual Peñafrancia Festival has them all. As
one of the Bicol region’s biggest draws, the event gives Marian devotees a chance to honor Our Lady
of Peñafrancia on her feast day this September 20 — and visitors an opportunity to witness a lively
gathering and grand fiesta in one.
