KUYA KIMATIENZA REVEALS HIS
SECRETS TO SUCCESSFUL AND

Despite the demands of anchoring a
noontime TV show, hosting the weekly
science-environmental educational
program
Matanglawin,
collecting
amusing bits of trivia and reporting
on the weather, Kuya Kim Atienza has
successfully taken trips as a family man,
athlete and celebrity.
As husband to Felicia and father
to Jose, 12, Eliana, 9, and Emman, 8,
he takes advantage of his time off to
travel with the whole clan. “We travel
during Christmas, Holy Week and
during the long weekend of All Soul’s
Day,” the award-winning trivia king
says. Weekends when Kuya Kim, an
avid runner, is racing are treated as
“race-cations”, during which he shares
his love of sports with the family. And
he makes it a point to travel once a
year with no one else but his wife.
Africa tops his list of favorite
destinations. “I’ve been to Africa
twice and it’s life-changing,” he says.
Alaska is also a favorite. During a trip
there in 2006 with his wife, they saw
the Hubbard Glacier and witnessed
a phenomenon known as calving, the
breaking off of chunks of ice at the
edge of a glacier as a result of global
warming. “You see up close the cycle
of life. You realize that man is a vital
part of that cycle, but only a small part,
yet you see the amount of damage we
do. It makes us more environmentally
conscious”, Kuya Kim reveals.
Locally, Kuya Kim and his family
frequent Iloilo and recently discovered
Coron. “It’s a quiet place and is a sight
to behold,” he says.
Whether Kuya Kim is traveling for
work or play, he plans ahead to ensure
a trouble-free trip. “Always be aware”
is his travel maxim, reflecting his
determination to keep his family safe
while seeing the sights. Here are a few
other nuggets of travel wisdom from
the nation’s favorite big brother.
