TheUniversity’s International Summer
Programmes (3 July–13August) offer a
headymixtureof tradition and innovation,
as hundreds of new and returning
students absorb the atmosphereof this
remarkableplace, learning from some
of its finest academics – and fromeach
other. Theprogrammes have a reputation
for excellent teaching, fascinating
courses, and intriguing lectures. Every
year, graduates, undergraduates andother
adults of all ages andbackgrounds bring
their learning and lifeexperience to the
classroom. There is no shortageof new
ideas andopinions.
Almost 200coursesmakeupeight
open-accessprogrammes: Science,
Literature, Ancient andClassicalWorlds,
History,Medieval Studies, Shakespeare,
CreativeWritingand Interdisciplinary.
Some students stay for all sixweeks, others
just foroneor two. There is alsoa four-
weekEnglishLegalMethodsProgramme,
designed for lawyers and law studentswith
noknowledgeof theEnglish legal system.
In addition to thismix of subjects and
teachingquality, there’s also thechance
to stay inoneof four historicCambridge
Colleges near thecity centre. Each is
different incharacter, but all offer awarm
welcome and theopportunity tomeet
fellow students studyingother subjects.
Participantsbecome familiarwith
Cambridge inaway that fewareprivileged
toexperienceas they sharemeals in
magnificentdininghallsandhave time to
discover apeaceful sideof thecity that
tourists seldom see. Long, light summer
daysprovideopportunities toexplore the
beautiful Colleges, visit themanymuseums
andart galleries, relax inapunton the river,
or sharea traditional English tea innearby
Grantchester. In theevenings thereare
talks, concertsand
ceilidhs
(traditional folk
dances). Atweekends, studentscan join
excursions toLondon,Windsor, Stratford-
upon-AvonandBletchleyPark.
