What’s your favorite foodie city? Somany to choose from, so little time.
Montreal,QuebecCity, andNewOrleansare recent highlights forme.Not
longago, I flew toMontreal—onAmericanAirlines, of course. Thiswasmy
first visit to theQuebecprovince (I know, what tookme so long?), and Iwas
thrilled tofindavibrant cityoverflowingwithfine foodandwine. I stayed
in theheart of the cityat LeSt-MartinHôtel Particulier, a lovelyboutique
property set inan ideal location, caught some of theMontreal’smagnificent
international jazz festival, andhaddinner atDaniel Boulud’s stylishnew
restaurant,MaisonBouludat theRitz-CarltonMontréal.
Montreal has some incrediblyunique foodiefinds,
like famousSchwartz’smeat, St-ViateurBagel shop,
Milanogrocery, Caffé Italia,Hamel cheese shops, and
SoupeSoup.Andoh, the farmersmarkets! Jean-Talon
Marketwasheavenly,withamazing colorsandflavors
at every turn. Sample the icewine, ice cider, and some
of the reddest, richest strawberriesyou’ll ever taste.
To furthermy culinary reconnoitering, I boardeda
VIARailCanada train (highly recommend it for travel-
ingbetween cities—premium class, of course!) and
headed forQuebecCity,whereyou can spenddays
exploringOldQuebec’s cobblestone streets linedwith
finerestaurants.Foranout-of-town journey, the luxurious
Charlevoix train isabsolutelymagical andamust-do,whether staying in the
flavorful region fora fewhoursora fewdays. I adoredQuebecCity, and share
someof itsgreat restaurantsonpage 38.
Ihadn’tbeen toNewOrleans inawhile, andwasdelighted to return. The
