Alone in the Dark 4: The New Nightmare
InfogramesThe fourth installment in the series that created the survival-horror genre, Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare doesn't quite live up to its legacy, as it more often than not resembles a shoddy knockoff of the franchise that has since defined the genre, Resident Evil.

You can play The New Nightmare as either Edward Carnby, a paranormal private investigator and poster boy for the series, or Aline Cedrac, a college professor and requisite video game babe. As in Resident Evil 2, the protagonists cross paths but have separate adventures within the main story, which, in this case, involves evil supernatural forces at work on the appropriately (but unimaginatively) named Shadow Island.

Although The New Nightmare uses the genre-standard, third-person, fixed-camera viewpoint, it adds a twist by bathing most of its detailed, predrawn 3-D backgrounds in darkness, and then equipping the player with a controllable flashlight. Not only does this create some rather impressive lighting effects, but it also heightens the sense of fear that is further fueled by the game's ominous music and sounds.

Unfortunately, the rest of The New Nightmare isn't very inspired. Its underdeveloped controls are on par with the first Resident Evil, which might not be so bad if not for that fact that this combat-light game has you tediously running around looking for keys to match its many nondescript locked doors, as well as trying to find solutions to vague puzzles that all too often leave you in the dark. —Joe Hon

Pros:Play as either of two protagonists, each in a separate adventureImpressive lighting effectsEffectively ominous music and soundsCons:Awkward v
Ape Escape
SPIGWhat's more fun than a barrel of opposable-thumbed simians? How about the silly—but challenging—Ape Escape? While not the first game to offer enhanced control with Sony's dual-stick analog controller, Ape Escape is the first game to require either an analog or dual shock controller to play. That requirement ensures that players will have full control of their hero, Spike. One stick moves Spike in any direction, while the other swings his monkey-catching devices.

In Ape Escape, a circus monkey named Specter stumbles upon a scientist's prototype intelligence-enhancing helmet, turning him into an evil monkey genius. As Spike, the professor's young friend, you must travel through time to clean up all of the monkeys Specter has sent back in his attempt to repopulate the world. If that's not enough to make you laugh, then chasing his goofy monkey minions as they scurry from your clutches will certainly tickle your funny bone. You'll discover a variety of gadgets to help you in your quest, including monkey radar, a slingshot, and a propeller for flying. Spanning 25 huge levels, Ape Escape is approachable for novices, and offers added challenges for veteran gamers. One such challenge is to lure a dinosaur near a rocky cliff, and then jar the monkey off his back and into your net. Note: no monkeys were harmed in the creation of this game. —Jeff Young

Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back
SonyLet me go on record and say that I was never a fan of the original Crash Bandico Even though Crash was disarmingly cute and fuzzy, and even though the game's graphics were just about as good as they got in those days, the frustrating design of the game made playing it such a painful experience that I still have flashbacks when I see small marsupials on the Discovery Channel. But just one short year after his debut, Crash is back in a sequel that is so far superior to the original that I'm willing to forget the mistakes of the past. The new storyline is simple: A very gullible Crash is corralled into collecting crystals for the evil Dr. Cortex and gems for the terrible N. Brio. There are 25 levels in all; each level contains an easy-to-find crystal and hard-to-earn gems. Instead of being forced to approach the game in a strictly linear fashion, you progress through a series of five warp rooms. Each warp room contains five levels, which you are free to tackle in any order. After you have found the crystals in each level, you can progress to the next warp room. This system of warp rooms is a great innovation; it's clear how to progress in the game, and yet you have the option of moving to a different level if you're hopelessly frustrated with one area. Best of all, you can save your game in the warp room at any time (a big improvement over the original game's horrific save system).

KonamiTurn this up! America is jamming with Dance Dance Revolution: Konamix. The arcade phenomenon of out-voguing everybody on the dance floor with your smooth moves comes home to the PlayStation. The game includes solid grooves from Japan's dance sensation and you can shake it down to 28 popping tracks pulled from Konami's all-time best Dance Mania tracks. Move it wild to slightly J-Pop and throw down fierce to some manic techno. And to get the best of it all, throw a party with a few rounds of 2-player Dance Dance dance-offs! Plus, with the special Dance Pad (available with the Dance Dance Revolution Dance Pad set), you can get your friends and neighbors on the floor and down on their feet just like in the arcade. DARE DEVIL DERBY 3D (SONY PLAYSTATION CD-ROM VIDEO GAME VERSION)Dare Devil Derby features six distinct single-player modes: Grand Prix - a series of ten races where players must finish in the top three to progress to the next track; World Series - a ten-race season where points are awarded for finishing position (a champ is crowned at the end of the season); Championship mode - a tournament where players race against one opponent on a variety of tracks; Knockout - a race against all other opponents where the last place finisher is eliminated from the competition; One on One - a race against each of the seven other characters, one at a time; and lastly Speed Trial - a one-lap race where the object is to break the track speed record. Pile on the seven different play modes for multiplayer contests, and this proves to be a very replayable game indeed.

Diablo
Sony"Monty Haul." "Hack and Slash." If these names mean anything to you, you'll like Diablo. The story is simple and doesn't get in the way of the action: the demon Diablo has set up shop beneath the cathedral on the edge of town, and it's your job to destroy him.

Diablo was and is one of the great PC role-playing games, and this PlayStation port holds true to the original. You create your character—Warrior, Sorcerer, or Rogue—and take him or her up in experience levels as you hack your way down, level by level, to the bottom of the dungeon beneath the cathedral, where Diablo awaits. Along the way you gain a lot of cool magical artifacts, weapons, and equipment. These mystical tools define your character as much as or more than the obligatory character stats such as strength, dexterity, and stamina.

The game's only flaws are due to its translation to the PlayStation. The controls can be difficult, especially with ranged weapons, and the two-player mode throws both characters on the same screen, often making it problematic to negotiate the various rooms of any given level.

Complaints aside, Diablo is a solid hack and slash adventure game. You'd be either a fool or a coward to pass it up. —John Cocking

Pros:Great hack and slash actionMagical goodies galoreClassic dungeon crawlCons:Awkward controlsFrustrating 2-player mode
Dino Crisis
CapcomNote to Parents: Realistic violence, gore, horror

An abandoned research complex on a remote jungle island, a team of special forces operatives, a horde of vicious velociraptors, and one big, mean Tyrannosaurus rex constitute the setting and cast of Dino Crisis, the latest masterpiece from the makers of Resident Evil.

You play as Regina, a member of a four-person team sent to retrieve an expatriate scientist. Your radio man became a midnight snack for the T.rex, so it's up to you and your two remaining teammates to explore a dino-infested research station, rescue the scientist, call for a helicopter retrieval, and escape with your lives. Along the way you'll uncover the grizzly remains of those who got in the dinosaurs' way, and you'll unravel the mystery of how a top-secret energy research project turned into a Jurassic nightmare.

And about those dinosaurs: they're all over the island. One instant you'll be walking along a second-story balcony, admiring the view, the next instant you'll be dodging a T.rex as it smashes its huge maw through the concrete walls. Velociraptors chase you down blood-spattered corridors, flying reptiles circle the outdoor areas, and your only weapons are your pistol, whatever else you can salvage, a dwindling supply of ammunition, and your wits.

Packed with clever puzzles and heart-pounding surprises, all superbly presented with realistic graphics and horror-movie camera angles, Dino Crisis is a triumph of survival-horror gaming. —Mike Fehlauer

Pros:Great sound effects and musicWell-integrated, varied, and clever puzzlesAwe-inspiring, terrifying dinosaursBranching story line improves replay value

Cons:Doors impervious to explosives
Dino Crisis 2
CapcomJudging by early screen shots, sneak peeks at the game's opening movie, and prerelease demos of the game itself, there will be a lot to talk about when Dino Crisis 2 takes its first public bow. It's also plain to see that while the original PlayStation is heading down the road to extinction, this is one title that shows the machine still has enough bite for most game players.

The story won't surprise anyone familiar with the first Dino Crisis. The powerful, enigmatic Third Energy is at the root of a whole bunch of new problems, making it tough for ordinary people (those with no guns) and military people (those with guns that don't work as well as they'd like). Reprising their roles from Dino Crisis, Dylan and Regina are cool and effective. In the most current, playable incarnation of the game, players start out as Dylan right after the opening movie.

With a few exceptions (a warehouse, a lab), most of the environments are in the great outdoors. They consist of jungles, fields, and other terrific places to get suddenly jumped by dinosaurs (Capcom likes psychological terror, folks).

And when dinos attack, they do so in wonderful ways. Gaggles of raptors spring out of the foliage, immediately snapping and attacking. Unlike in the first game, your character can now use two weapons in conjunction, a nice feature. For instance, one demo had Regina equipped with a large automatic machine gun and a less effective (but more persistent) taser. Use either weapon effectively by aiming and firing, or do a 180-degree spin-and-shoot with the press of a button. Because you can quickly get surrounded by swarms of raptors, this feature is a must. It also lends the game more of an action feel than the previous game.

The spin-and-shoot feature, and others like it, makes it easy to spend your allotment of ammo, so use it judiciously. The taser is a welcome backup for various raptors and other pests, but it has no effect on a monster T. rex. For those, you need bullets—bigger and bigger bullets. By killing beasties quickly and efficiently, players are awarded combo points, which can be used for upgrading to bigger and better weapons.

Like a bad penny, those pesky T. rex bosses keep cropping up when you're low on ammo, health, or both. Stockpiling ammunition and safeguarding both your weapons for boss confrontations—as well as recognizing and countering the movements of the bosses—are the only ways to make it. Of course, that's like saying that all you need to win the lottery are the right numbers: easier said than done.

With new features and gameplay mechanisms, slick graphics, and a quick frame rate, this just might be a sequel that's worth the wait. —Todd Mowatt

After passing the test, tackle the missions of the story mode, which has over 40 missions that involve picking up and dropping off items or pursuing and disabling other cars. One of the major obstacles to completing your goals is the cops; they don't know that you are undercover, and letting you pass would blow your cover. Ehrgeiz
Square EnixEditorial Review With a fighting mode, four mini-games, and a stand-alone role-playing game (RPG), Ehrgeiz is essentially six games for the price of one. First, duke it out as one of 10 playable characters (3 of which are from the popular RPG Final Fantasy VII) in hand-to-hand and weapons-based combat. There are 11 different fighting environments to tackle, including a moving train and a hovering airship. Ehrgeiz scores points for diversity. The arsenal of warriors is comprised of various ages, nationalities, and sexes—all of whom are eager to win the ultimate fighting championship. The prize is a mysterious weapon (the strangely dubbed Ehrgeiz). There are a gazillion moves to memorize, and the fluid movement and fantastic secret weapons provide great eye candy. In addition to fighting, players will also encounter mini-games, such as the foot race "Battle Beach" and strategy game "Battle Panel" (think Othello). This game also contains several elements that will be instantly familiar to RPG fans. Ehrgeiz may not satisfy gamers who want a dedicated RPG or fighting game, but it does offer a diverse range of gameplay for the casual gamer with a limited attention span
Fear Effect
The Hobby SpotDespite its unforgiving difficulty, Fear Effect is an innovative cinematic adventure that serious gamers won't want to miss. Set in a dark, futuristic world, Fear Effect has players switching back and forth between its three anime-style protagonists. With a story that's filled with plot twists and heaps of what the Entertainment Software Rating Board finds offensive, this is far from kiddie fare.

Easily one of the most visually striking PlayStation titles, Fear Effect shines with Japanese-animation-inspired 3-D character graphics and full-motion-video environments that allow for nearly seamless transitions between story sequences and gameplay. With the exception of restoring saves and changing CDs, there's virtually no game interruption.

Unfortunately, it's very easy to die in Fear Effect, which not only wrecks the game's pacing, but can be really quite maddening. Many portions of the game are more frustrating than challenging, requiring players to die and reload their last saved game over and over until they get things just right.

And while Fear Effect's less-than-perfect controls admittedly do take some getting used to, its real-time inventory system is just plain awkward during combat sequences. It's doubtful that professional mercenaries like the ones you're playing would be fumbling about while changing or reloading weapons in the heat of battle.

Despite its flaws, Fear Effect does manage to keep you hooked, and is one of those games you just have to see through to its end. —Joe Hon

Pros:
Striking cinematic visualsVirtually no game interruptionsIntriguing storyline and refreshingly mature contentFear Meter aspect adds new challengeCons:
Can be more frustrating than challenging at timesAwkward real-time inventory systemRelatively short game length with little to no replay valueMay be unsuitable for younger players

Mega Man X4
CapcomSome video games the masses can enjoy, and some video games cater to the hard-core fanatic of a specific genre. Flight sims are a good example, as are most golf games. What many don't realize, though, is that even a genre as innocuous as the simple platform shooter has a hard-core fan base - a league of players that can run faster, shoot longer, and generally destroy any side scroller in one sitting. These blister-thumbed few need something better, faster, harder. Mega Man X4 was created for them. First, you must be a fan of the motif to even understand this game. By motif, I'm talking about anime and all the Speed Racer-esque backgrounds, bizarre character names, and recycled sound effects that go along with it. In addition to the game's general aesthetics, all the cinematic scenes are 100 percent anime, right down to the shamefully bad voice acting. The first scene introduces you, by means of a frantic music video, to all the games major characters. From there, you are thrust into the action of the game's first two-stage level that serves as a teaser to the rest of the story. Through much in-game exposition, we learn that General and Colonel (great names!), under instruction from the evil Sigma, have incited Repliforce, an army of reploids formerly allied with our heroes, the Maverick Hunters, to riot. Following Sigma's plans to destroy the human race that created them, they have demolished a Maverick Hunter base and promise to continue the destruction until their final weapon is complete, and the earth is vaporized, or something like that. It is, of course, up to Mega Man X and his faithful partner, Zero, to foil their plans and save the earth from destruction.
Mega Man X5
CapcomMega Man's exploits have been taking place on a variety of different platforms for more than a decade, but recent attempts to bring old Mega Man into 3-D have largely been missteps. That's why we were chomping at the bit to play Mega Man X5, because it marks a long-overdue return to MM's 2-D roots.

Unfortunately, the game plays more like a rushed overcorrection than a nostalgic, side-scrolling romp. For example, you can now choose between three playable characters: Zero, X, and Fourth. It's a good idea, but the problem is that the characters are so different that this option actually destroys the fluidity of the gaming experience. In the original Mega Man X titles, you couldn't progress until you found a weapon that could be used to destroy a particular boss. In X5, bosses can be put out of their misery with the Z-Saber and the X-Buster.

But the game's biggest problem is its difficulty. The first law of game design is that a game should provide gradual, continual challenge. X5 just keeps getting easier and easier due to the endless number of checkpoints and unlimited continues. The result is Mega Man with training wheels.

By Mega Man standards, this game is truly a disappointment. On the bright side, if you are new to the gaming scene and are looking for a simple game that will help you improve your skills, this game might be your cup of tea. For most gamers, though, X5 is way too easy! —Todd Mowatt

Pros: Mega Man returns to his 2-D platform rootsCons:This game is way too easy, with too many checkpoints and unlimited continuesText-driven cut scenes and massive slowdown problems bog this game down
Mega Man X6
CapcomMega Man X6 begins shortly after the previous game. The space colony has crashed into the planet, and Zero—the plasma-sword-equipped crimson hero of the Mega Man X series—has just been destroyed. Sifting through the debris is a scientist named Gate, who stumbles upon a special piece of technology at the site and then retreats to his lab. Moments later, the scientist is shown in his laboratory conducting experiments when all of a sudden, he goes mad and begins talking about creating a perfect world for reploids. Mavericks—the animal-like robot enemies found in previous games—start appearing around the world, causing Mega Man to take action and find out what's going on. With the exception of the explanation of various gameplay mechanics, Mega Man's narrative is largely irrelevant and uninteresting. The dialogue that occurs between Mega Man and the mavericks is ridiculous and uninteresting—even the game seems to lose its bearing on the main plot, as you'll hear very little from Gate and his sidekick Isoc a

If he stays in the shadows, Snake will be able to move through the compound undetected and unharmed. Of course, it isn't all about stealth, and there are plenty of weapons at Snakes disposal. In METAL GEAR SOLID, the fate of the world rests on your shoulders.
Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions
KonamiMetal Gear Solid is one of the most successful, and maybe one of the best, PlayStation games ever. These virtual reality missions expand on the training of the special forces unit your character in MGS came from.

You, as the Virtual Reality embodiment of Solid Snake of MGS fame, can go through specific training for each of the weapons in MGS, combat simulators, and even a photo shoot. That's right, while you're working through the VR missions (most of which are mini-puzzles), your reward is that you get closer and closer to the game's female characters in a photo session. You can also unlock extra missions, eventually becoming able to play as a ninja.

The best part, though, is working through the higher level training missions, where the skills you thought you perfected in MGS are really put to the test. With 300 missions packed into this game, you better start training now. —John Cocking

Pros:Short levels mean you can play during your lunch hourMore Metal Gear Solid actionCombat training with plastic explosivesCons:Hierarchical progression of levels can bore expert playersMostly valuable as an add-on to Metal Gear Solid

POINT BLANK does have plenty of shooting, but brainless it isn't. With healthy splashes of RPG thrown in, this title sends you out on missions as either Dr. Don or Dr. Dan. Whether you go it alone or with a friend in Duo mode, POINT BLANK will send you on a variety of missions: some will have you packing buckets of ammunition, while others will give you a single bullet to accomplish your task.
Quake II
Activision Inc.The unabashedly bloody and violent shooter that has splattered PC screens since its release has come to roost on the PlayStation. Yeah, it's awfully gratuitous. No, you shouldn't let the kids play. But darn it if this game isn't a sure-fire hit that depends on pure, visceral action. For those who haven't been shaken by this computer megahit, it's your basic cavernous hallway crawl populated by biotech alien bad guys who want nothing more than to make you expire. For your enjoyment, you are given a virtual armory of ridiculously powerful devices with which to destroy your attackers. Expect gore, and lots of it.

Surprisingly, disc loading times in midlevel are short, and the movement is fluid with fast frame rates. Also, the control using the dual shock game pad is very well implemented, although for the small percentage of PlayStation owners who bought a mouse for the system, this game is compatible. In fact, Quake II makes the purchase of a mouse a worthwhile decision. Multiplayer games excel, even with tedious split screens. Rather than letting you save your progress anywhere, the game has specific saving points within each level, and enough of them so that you won't be too frustrated. —Jeff Young

Pros:One of the best first-person shooters on the PlayStationVertigo-inducing realismGreat use of PlayStation controllers and optional mouseCons:Incredibly violent

Resident Evil
CapcomBest Playstation Game Overall!
Resident Evil 2
SonyRaccoon City has been overrun by the living dead, and you are one of only a dwindling handful of survivors. You must escape the doomed city or become part of a ghastly new food chain: one with you at the bottom.

You play as either Leon Kennedy, a rookie cop who's having a really bad first day on the job, or Claire Redfield, sister of one of the stars of the original Resident Evil. Leon and Claire's meeting is depicted in a visually stunning, B-movie cutscene. They're quickly separated, but occasionally meet up throughout the game.

Right after the gruesome intro, you're dumped into the thick of things and have to dash through the devastated city streets, fleeing from one horde of zombies after another. As you make your way to a supposed refuge—the city police station—you find evidence that the citizenry fought bravely against the undead menace—and lost. Smashed barricades, abandoned police cars, boarded-up stores, dismembered bodies, and hundreds of expended bullet shell casings are all-too-common sights. Once you reach the station, you discover the remains of a siege. The defenders' desperate final hours are recorded in a fragmented journal. Its pages detail a possible escape route through an underground passage. Did the cops make it out? The alarming number of zombies wearing tattered police uniforms may be a clue.

Resident Evil 2 keeps the terrific puzzles and action of the original while vastly improving cinematic qualities such as dialogue, camera angles, cutscenes, atmosphere, and location design. An instant survival horror classic, Resident Evil 2 has it all. —John Cocking

Pros:ZombiesCheesy horror movie actionReal sense of dread—actually makes you jump with fright2 characters, 2 different angles on the storyCons:Clumsy save-game interfaceBacktracking for puzzles
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
CapcomThe third installment of the series that redefined the survival horror video game genre, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is the best Resident Evil yet. As Jill Valentine, one of the original game's survivors, players must fight for their lives while fleeing a city overrun by hordes of zombies and other hideous creatures mutated by a sinister corporation's biotechnological virus. To make thing worse, a near-invincible monstrosity known as the Nemesis stalks Jill throughout the game, which raises the series' suspense level to an all-new high.

In addition to the constant threat of the Nemesis, Resident Evil 3 features other gameplay elements new to the series: players can now dodge attacks, perform quick 180-degree turns, and create ammunition by mixing gunpowder types. Also, the "Live Selection" feature forces players to make decisions that affect the story's direction.

While none of these additions are particularly groundbreaking, Resident Evil 3 keeps the player in suspense and the action even more intense than in its predecessors, proving that more of same can be a good—make that very, very good—thing in a sequel. —Joe Hon

Pros:
Suspenseful and thoroughly engrossing storylineExcellent use of topnotch graphics and sound to establish moodImproved controls and faster load time between scenesThe Mercenaries secret game adds serious replay value

Cons:
Third-person, fixed-camera-angle point-of-view can be awkwardMay be too intense for younger players

Star Wars Demolition
LucasArtsA vehicular combat game set "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away," Star Wars Demolition is yet another embarrassingly mediocre title based on the premier science fiction movie series. A mishmash of elements from the various Star Wars films, the laughably implausible premise here allows for disparate combatants (Boba Fett, a piloted podracer, and a Rancor, to name a few) to fight in arenas that range from inappropriate (e.g., the swampy Dagobah) to impossible (e.g., the surface of the Death Star II).

It's a shame that the gameplay in Star Wars Demolition isn't even remotely as imaginative as its "what if?" fanboy scenario, as all you've got here is an uninspired regurgitation of similar games (like Vigilante 8), with clunky controls tossed in for bad measure.

Whatever amusement one can find in Star Wars Demolition wears thin really fast, making this disc one really expensive Star Wars-themed drink coaster. —Joe Hon

Street Fighter Alpha 3
CapcomALL-TIME CLASSIC. FOR SONY PLAYSTATION VIDEO GAME SYSTEM. SUPER FUN. GREAT FOR COLLECTORS. HERE IS SOME INFO ON THE GAME. The third in the Alpha series has a total of 31 fighters, the most in the series so far. New characters include old favorites E. Honda, Blanka, Vega, Cammy, T. Hawk, Dee Jay, Juni and Juli. Some of the newest fighters on the block include a former Final Fight character (Cody, who has been in jail since the last Final Fight game, or so his clothing suggests), Karin Kanzuki and Rainbow Mika. The major difference between this Alpha and the last two are the new play modes World Tour, Arcade, VS, Training and Entry. World Tour - Simply choose your fighter and travel around the world, fighting the home town heroes that you run into. The more fights you win, the stronger you fighter becomes. You can also learn new moves, and there are three levels of Super moves to choose from before you start each round (called Isms). Arcade - A simple conversion of the arcade version. Beat each fighter with your chosen warrior, in three rounds per match (much the same as past versions of Street Fighter) Versus - Two human players battle it out. Training - A good way to learn all the super moves that are available, against a dummy. Entry - If you save your character during the World Tour mode, you can upload him here to use in the other modes in the game (especially handy for Training). Finally, if you complete certain areas of the game three new fighters become available, including another old favourite in Guile, Evil Ryu and Shin Akuma.

Tenchu: Stealth Assassins
Activision Inc.Cast as either the male Rikimaru or the female Ayame, you are a ninja assassin hired to right the wrongs of the land. To aid you in your missions, you have access to a whole arsenal of ninja tools, including a sword, flash grenades, smoke bombs, grappling hooks, poison pills, and throwing stars. Be assured you will need every resource to fight your way through the maze of houses, gardens, forests, and castles in ancient Japan.

Your target must be eliminated at all costs, but the code of your honorable clan instructs you to harm no innocents. The wise ninja chooses his or her battles; stealth, deception, avoidance, and distraction are the tools of your trade. But sometimes combat with guards is unavoidable, and Tenchu offers the best of both third-person action games and two-person fighting games with an interface that allows for multiple forms of attack and defense. Be warned: the animation in this game is not for the faint of heart. Blood flows freely and realistic sound effects and movie cut scenes make no attempt to hide the brutality of the assassination business. Overall a great game for fans of Japanese animation or martial arts. —Allen Stewart

Square EnixShe's back! Action heroine Lara Croft returns in this impressive action adventure game from Eidos. Once again, the world's most famous "grrrl gamer" must jump, swim, climb, and shoot her way through numerous challenges. There are five locations and 15 massive levels to explore, including the South Pacific, India, London, Antarctica, and Area 51. Unlike previous games in the series, this version lets you visit any of the gaming areas in any order that you prefer. This change enables beginning players to immediately appreciate the diverse gaming environments and designs of different levels that have captivated advanced gamers for the duration of the popular series.
Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation
EidosLara Croft returns once again in the fourth installment of the popular Tomb Raider series. The newest effort brings Internet pinup Lara back to the Egyptian tombs that she roamed in the series opener (the now classic Tomb Raider). Our heroine must seek out Horus, an Egyptian god that has the ability to capture the evil soul Set. With a combination of puzzle solving and sharp gaming skills, Lara will navigate through numerous Egyptian locations, including Cairo, Karnak, Giza, Valley of the Kings, and Alexandria.

This game promises to unveil vital background information on Lara Croft, who has emerged as an Internet cult icon since the release of the original Tomb Raider in the mid-'90s. At one point in the game, you will flash back to Lara at age 16 to see the origin of her adventurous spirit that precedes her full-fledged career as a tomb raider.

While gameplay remains faithful to the preceding titles in the series, there are also several new gameplay elements to explore, including a new inventory system, new weapons, and new moves.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
Activision Inc.One of the most anticipated sequels in recent memory, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 builds on the addictive gameplay of the original by adding many new tricks and features. The idea is still to perform complicated tricks for points, and players can still ride as Tony or any of an expanded roster of pros in the new game. Now, though, players can create their own skaters from scratch, selecting appearance, gear, clothes, and more. Players can also create their own ideal skate park by instantly building ramps, rails, pipes, and other challenging obstacles. All of the old tricks remain, with hundreds of additions. Of course, with all of those new tricks to master, there are also more detailed accidents: scraped knees, broken boards, and wall and (ouch!) pole collisions.

Vagrant Story
Electronic ArtsVagrant Story is one of those games that wows you at the start—a big "WOW!" in this case—but maintains only a tenuous hook in the long haul. In this mix of action/adventure and fantasy role-playing, players are cast as a Riskbreaker (think one-man army) named Ashley Riot, whose pursuit of a villainous cult leader takes him to the mysterious city of Lea Monde.

The highly stylized graphics in Vagrant Story are easily some of the best ever seen on the PlayStation, and give the game a gorgeous, distinctive look to match its somber tone. Cinematic story sequences blend in almost seamlessly with gameplay, which takes place in 3-D environments (viewed from a third-person perspective) that can be rotated to provide the best angle.

Vagrant Story features a rich battle system that's built on both strategy and quick reflexes. In addition to character statistics, weapons and armor have detailed numbers of their own and can be disassembled, assembled, or even combined to create new items. Hand/eye coordination factors heavily into combat, as Ashley develops offensive and defensive battle abilities that require perfectly timed button pushing in order to be used.

Unfortunately, it's all too easy to get bored with Vagrant Story. The painfully linear gameplay here doesn't rise above killing enemy after enemy in room after room, and (oh boy!) solving puzzles by manipulating boxes. If not for the wholly intriguing (but sparsely littered) plot, one would be strongly tempted just to leave Ashley to rot in the catacombs beneath Lea Monde. —Joe Hon

Pros:Highly stylized graphicsRich battle systemIntriguing plotCons:Shallow, linear gameplay

Wipeout 3
PsygnosisThe futuristic racing series Wipeout has lost some of its steam with this third entry—but Wipeout 3 is still worth a look and a listen. This fast-action franchise has frequently been characterized as being more about style than substance. While we don't necessarily agree with that analysis, it is true that Wipeout 3 can overwhelm the senses with an amazing amount of eye and ear candy. The graphics are simply stunning, while the techno-charged soundtrack boasts some of the top names in electronica, including Chemical Brothers, Underworld, and Orbital.

Pulsating rhythms aside, Wipeout 3 offers players a wild ride through eight distinct tracks. It will take more than perpetual motion to make it to the end of each race. In order to complete each timed race, gamers are required to hit strategically placed power ups while navigating many near-impossible turns. The heart-racing action offers a tough challenge for dedicated games, but Wipeout 3 ultimately does not offer any significant improvement over earlier titles in the acclaimed series. —Brett Atwood
