Entering Cluny

Hotel de Bourgogne, Cluny
(no, we didn't stay there)

View over Cluny with a map
of where the abbey was situated;
only one transept and one tower
remain

Another view  (jb)

Interesting building façade

Pastoral Cluny

Another view of the remaining
tower

No entry!  Except for bikes...
strolling through Cluny

Another abbey view - note the
flying buttresses

The large "footings" in the courtyard
were for the columns of the nave
of the church  (jb)

Robert and Liza at lunch (jb)

And this was it!  Baguette, salami,
cheese from the farmers' market,
and some wine and coke zero (not
together)

John Black, Ron Pflipsen, Sully at
the picnic

Our hotel in Tournus, Le Rempart
(jb)

Enjoying some belgian beer (Affligem)
following our short bike check-out ride -
Sully, John U, John B, Ron

We enjoyed our beer too!

Church of St Philibert in
Tournus, early 11th century

Floor mosaics relatively recently
discovered inside St Philibert

St Philibert altar...

...nave and organ...

Going down to the crypt

Impressive columns and
barrel arches

Snack break en route to
Sennecey-le-Grande  9/23

This little chateau is a retirement home
now (we thought about just stopping)
(jb)

Ron and John B

DHTB showing off jerseys

Inside the Special Air Services (SAS)
museum in Sennecey-le-Grande

The SAS motto was "Qui ose gagne" -
he who dares, wins

Bike parking along the moat

Scrumptuous picnic lunch (jb)

Back on the road towards Beaune,
Sully Frumenti found "his" village

In Beaune, Liza visited the
Musée du Vélo - bicycle
museum - this jersey belonged to
Laurent Jalabert

Museum had lots of bikes from
earliest models to more recent...

Including Chris Boardman's time-trial
bike from 1992 (later UCI-banned)

Ok, practice your French now!

Dinner in Tournus at the restaurant
Le Bourgogne - here are Liza's
(already eaten) escargot, yum!

Some remnants of coq au vin with
a bottle of Cotes du Rhône wine

Liza's apple sorbet with calvados
(apple brandy)

Poached pear with gelato and
caramel, chocolate sauces  (jb)

Jean-François giving the
next morning briefing - we're
heading to Beaune!
