“Our favorite thingabout
beingapartofTheGoogly
Gooeys is thatwe’reable to
travel, and shareour storyon
theblog throughcomicsand
photos,” revealsTippy.
“I lovehow thecommunity
comes together to share tips
andcommentsabout travel
destinations. I also loveall
the travel opportunities that
comewith theblog, from
beingable to rediscover
our beautiful country to the
chance to cross out some
items onour bucket list.”
Tippy shares a few things
they’ve learned so far.
FLYSOLO
Thiswillmakeyoudiscover
a lotof thingsabout yourself.
You learn tobecomemore
independent, andyouget to
pickup the local language
morequickly.
TRAVEL INAGROUP
IFYOU’REONA
BUDGET
From local road trips
to trips abroad, inour
experience this is themost
cost-effectiveway to
travel.Accommodations
and transportation canbe
dividedeasilyamonga
bigger group.Also, thereare
a lot ofmuseumpasses and
train tickets inEurope that
aremeant for largegroups.
PICKYOUR
FAVORITESEASON
Thisway you canplan the
photos andactivities ahead,
aswell asprepare for the
weather.
It’s so funnyhow the
hubbyand I always argue
over this: I want towear
summer dresseswhilehe,
likeapolar bear, thrives
in freezing temperatures.
Wewere inNewYork last
Februaryand itwas crazy
cold: the “hottest”was 2˚C
while the coldestwas -18˚C,
witha real feel of -28˚C.
Weprepared for it rather
well, except for anunusually
cold last day, but itwas fun
anyway.
Wewere inParis last
November, andbothof us
were reallyhappywefinally
caught thepeakof the fall
season, when the leaves
werea combinationof neon
andbrown. Theywere really
picturesque.
GET INTOUCHWITH
LOCALFRIENDS
It’snice tohave some friends
around theworldbecause
youalwaysget to seeaplace
from theirpointof view.
They canhelp youfind the
best non-touristyplaces,
and thebest places for local
delicacies.
This tipcame inespecially
handy formewhen I visited
Malaysia lastAugust. I was
there for abook fair andwe
had free time in theevening.
I was sohappy tohavemet
some local bloggers. They
tookme to local cafés, andwe
didan impromptuwatercolor
session inoneof them.
AVOIDTHEPEAK
SEASON
We lovegoing toplaces
when it’s not aweekend
that’spopularwith tourists;
for example, weoftengo
toBaguioonMondays and
Tuesdays.Wealsoavoid
longweekends at everyone’s
favoritedestinations, and love
flyingduring theoff-peak
season sowe canavoid long
lines and crowdedplaces. The
expenses are lower, too!
BELIEVE INTHE
KINDNESSOF
STRANGERS
I wouldhaveprobablybeen
the last person to tell you
this a few years ago, but
throughmy trips last year
I realized I wouldn’t have
beenable toget around
if itweren’t for thepeople
whohelpedmealong the
way. Therewas theguy
whohelpedmepullmy
25kg luggageup the stairs;
the couplewhohelped
mebuymy ticket; thebus
driverwhogavemea free
rideand refused toaccept
a tipbecause I took the
opposite route; theoldman
who couldbarely speakmy
language, yetwent out of
hisway to look for someone
who couldanswermy
questions inEnglish. There
wereevendayswhen I
wouldget teary-eyed
because itwas as if angels
werebeing sentmyway.
