Award-winning soprano Rachelle
Gerodias finds herself traveling
to places like South Korea and
Japan to perform in productions
such as
Don Giovanni, La Traviata
and
Carmen
. In fact, she’s now in
Singapore to play Fiordiligi in the
Singapore Lyric Opera’s staging
of Mozart’s
Così Fan Tutte
, which
runs until March 3.
“Traveling is one of the many
perks of my job as an opera and
classical singer. I get invited to
perform in different places, so I
get to travel for free. Because of
this, I also travel alone most of the
time,” says the UST Conservatory
of Music faculty member, who
recently released her first solo
album,
Philippine Art Songs
.
Rachelle wouldn’t have it any
other way. She’s an adventurous
traveler who likes trying new
things and meeting people. “You
kind of get forced to mingle with
the locals and learn a foreign
language. I’m also free to do what
I want and go wherever I like.”
Her first priority wherever she
goes? Visiting places that are
steeped in history. “That’s why my
favorites are Italy and Russia.”
“The trips that I cherish the
most are those where I’ve made
lasting friendships and beautiful
memories, and where I learned
something new about myself,”
Rachelle says. “Traveling for me is
also about self-discovery.”
