Hotel played host to Joseph
Conrad and W. Somerset
Maugham. Built in the 1920s,
The Majestic was originally the
home of a wealthy Chinese
merchant. Evidently, he had
impeccable taste: windows built
high and wide for maximum
light, doorways adorned with
intricate woodwork and floors
paved with slabs of teakwood
or fine, crafted tiles. Much of
the original structure and its
fittings have been retained,
even after a taller structure with
