You hear all kinds of regional
stereotypes being bandied about
and I know enough to reject all of
them but one (or maybe two — most
people I know from Central Visayas
do love a good party). People from
Bohol, I’d been told, are warm and
friendly, artistic and hardworking. This
proved to be true on my first visit —
everywhere I went, from the markets
to the tourist spots, people seemed
eager to help me out. The traditional
and modest
nipa
homes stood out
thanks to the beautiful woven patterns
on their walls, making the idyllic
countryside landscape even prettier.
Roadsides were lined with gorgeous
carved and hand-woven crafts for sale.
There were centuries-old churches
and well-preserved ancestral houses
everywhere. It was such a delightful
first visit that I found myself returning
to Bohol whenever I needed a certain
kind of summer fix — the kind that
involves lazing around on a lovely
beach and learning something of our
heritage. Last year’s earthquake has
left Bohol a bit the worse for wear, but
its people have been quick to rally and
get the place back on its feet, which is
yet another reason you should head
there this summer: to be inspired by
the region’s can-do spirit. Enjoy!
