In the know
It’s not all history in Florence.
La Cité Libreria Café
(lacitelibreria.info) is one
of several venues offering
cutting-edge theatre, art,
music and dance, CCC
Strozzina (strozzina.org) does
a great job of promoting
young Italian artists, while the
Viper Theatre (viperclub.eu)
is the place to catch touring
indie bands.
The Italian Riviera offers the full range of seaside experiences from faded
glamour to posh resorts, tiny fishing villages and unspoiled gems. Here are three
uncrowded yet beautiful stretches of coastline

Back of
the net
The new football season starts in Italy on 24 August and there’s a good spread of Serie A clubs
throughout the region. Fiorentina were last season’s surprise package, only just missing out
on the Champions League, while Livornowill bemore than happy to avoid relegation
Camogli
With its pastel-
coloured tall houses, rickety
fishing boats floating in the
harbour, and delightful mom-
and-pop restaurants, Camogli
is an underexplored gem on the
Ligurian coast. Hotel Cenobio
(cenobio.it) is highly rated and
centrally located.
Viareggio
Viareggio is as Italian
as it gets, the kind of town where
it seems the entire population
puts on their best clothes to
walk along the Belle Époque
promenade each evening. It’s
best known for its carnival,
although you’ll have to wait until
February for the next one.
Bonassola
Tourists have yet
to discover this quiet Ligurian
fishing town just outside the
Cinque Terre. It ticks all the boxes:
beautiful old houses, a long sandy
beach and many walking trails in
the nearby hills. Here you must
adjust to the rural Italian pace of
life – as slow as possible.
