After Norwegian takes delivery of its first 787 Dreamliner,
we ask what it means for passengers
T
here’s been a fair bit of
fanfare around Norwegian’s
first delivery of a 787
Dreamliner in June. That’s not
just because the plane really
is very cool (
see main feature p44
), and
marks a symbolic moment for Norwegian
– it’s also because it will make long-haul
flying faster, cheaper and easier for you.
As Norwegian CEO Bjørn Kjos explained
before the Dreamliner’s first flight:
“Because of the Dreamliner’s efficiency,
people will now be able to fly long-haul
at a lower cost to themselves and the
environment. It’s the first plane that can
be in the air 18 hours a day, because of its
lower maintenance, and it’s faster, cutting
40 minutes off the current flying time
from Stockholm to Bangkok.”
With a further seven Dreamliners on
order, Kjos suggested the plane will lead
to more Norwegian long-haul destinations
beyond the current crop of New York,
Bangkok and Fort Lauderdale. “The future
is a global competition rather than a
regional one and we know Scandinavia is
a small market globally. We expect most
of the travel to originate in the Far East in
the future – we want to be in a position to
cater to those travellers. You will see us
flying all over the world.”
