the Dutch elms began to burnish and drift into the
swan-speckled waters of the Oudezijds Achterburgwal
canal, a gathering took place that saw the city’s
beau
monde
amass en masse for the social-media hyped
opening of the summer.
They were there to raise a bottle of craft beer to the
launch of the Dutch capital’s first ‘barcade’, a hipsterish
concept borrowed, inevitably, from Brooklyn by Serdar
Tonkas, the Ton Ton Club’s 31-year old co-founder. But,
while the beautiful, retro arcade interior of his new
venture, stuffed with iconic 1980s and 90s game
machines, such as
Mortal Kombat
and
Daytona USA
,
would not look out of place in New York’s coolest
borough, the setting just might.
Located off the Oudekerksplein, site of the oldest
