Hiding behind –
In Your Mind

Dobar Zvuk
(Good Sound) has long been an essential
stop-off on Zagreb’s second-hand trail. It’s a great place to sift
through the heaps of plastic left behind by former Yugoslavia’s
once-mighty record industry. “Yugoslav labels were very up to
date when it came to releasing major albums from the West,”
says DJ, sound collagist and collector Labosh, 34. The most
expensive record he ever bought was by a Yugoslav prog-rock
band from the 70s, Pop Mašina. “Luckily, there’s a CD version,
so I can listen to it without wearing down the vinyl,” he says.
Labosh’s cutting-edge work as a DJ has frequently involved
the crackly noises at the beginning and end of records rather
than the music in between, but his listening tastes remain
in the classics. “The avant-garde may give you a thrill,
but you always have to go back to Led Zeppelin in the end.”
